"SMS Popup" is awesome. Good looking popup, option for text-to-speech (for reading the text to you), speech-to-text (for saying what you want to text back), completely customize the vibrate and LED color/speed, etc. Its really good.
the way i did it was set one of the 3 keys from the popup to be speech, then when i clicked it, it prompted me to install the tts extended dictionary. did that and was all set.
I have been able to get the text to speech work for incoming messages, but when I try to reply with speech to text, I cannot figure that out. I do not see an option where I can speak into the phone and have it translated into text to be sent....

I use Pop-up SMS as well. I used Handcent for the first week but I got tired of waiting for the MMS update. Also, the last update was a bit laggy for me.

There is an app called "SMS Popup" which does just that, adds a popup for incoming messages. I didn't like it that much. Both of the full-featured messaging app replacements (Handcent SMS and Chomp SMS) have popup features as well. I prefer Chomp. I noticed Handcent crashed far too often and the popup made my home screen screwy and slow.
