Help SMS Showing Number & Not Contact Name

@diliupg HI. i have tried what you suggested. But the same continues. I use oneplus one. I have also tried turning my phone off and forcefully stopping few apps.

Can anyone please suggest more on this issue.

I have had this problem several times after rebooting my phone where even existing messages show only a phone number where there once was a name. Ive beeen lucky enough where all i had to do was swipe the messaging app closed andthen when i reopened i had everything righteous.. Thanks for everyone's input!

I had this problem with my Nexus 6 using Verizon service. I would get group text messages with all people in my contact list, but some would should names while others only phone numbers. I was able to fix it:
(1) In the message window, click on that three-dot button in the upper right hand corner.
(2) Click on "People & Options".
(3) Touch a phone number where the name is not being displayed.
(4) Click on the pencil icon.
(5) You will see the first and last name is blank on the contact (in my case, my contact's name was listed under "Notes"), so enter their name and hit save.
Their name should now appear in your text messages!

I was having this issue as well on my Pixel XL where a few contacts were stuck only showing the number in SMS apps. I tried fixing the phone number "+" prefix stuff, removing contact entirely, rebooting etc... nothing worked. Then I had a thought, duplicates.

Went to the "duplicates" screen in google contacts in a regular chrome browser on my desktop and saw the contact that only showed the number had a duplicate with only a number associated with it. Merged the contact and shortly later(less than a minute) it showed up proper on my phone. I'm using the "Messenger" app for SMS(not facebook messenger) though that probably doesn't matter.

I am unable to reproduce the problem by adding the number only contact back to my contacts so hopefully what I think fixed it actually did... at least it's a painless thing to try. Best of luck.

Hi all,

I just spent a couple of hours getting frustrated, playing, researching, and experimenting, trying to find a way to retrieve my contact names into my text messages, and here is the link to the information that finally got them all back in there for me:

https://support.sprint.com/support/...GalaxyS7:RecoverContactsOnYourSamsungGalaxyS7

I had already backed up my contacts in Google previously, so I knew they were there, but they were just not displaying in my phone contacts, or my text messages for some reason. I followed the instructions, and voilà...problem solved! Hope it helps! :)

FIXED
Hey guys, I've been having the same problem recently on my Samsung note 4 where my Messages and WhatsApp conversations weren't displaying the names. Only displaying the phone numbers which makes things confusing.

To fix it
Select Settings > Application Manager > (the app you need to display the names) i.e. Messages or WhatsApp > Permissions

From here switch Contacts to on. This will allow the app to access the names thru contacts. It should update on the app, if not turn the app off and try restarting your phone.

Hope this helps ;)
