Help SMS Smileys not showing up

Just recieved my Xperia S, pretty happy, apart from smileys - it seems that my partners phone always truncates the smileys, i.e. removes the hyphen, and so they don't show up properly on my phone. She see's all my smileys, but even if she types :-) (colon hyphen right bracket) it comes through as :) colon right bracket.

this is already annoying both of us - anyone else have this issue?

Her phone is a Blackberry.

You mean you ain't happy with your phone because another phone messes up the smilies?
Am I missing something?

Its not just her phone, its from any phone that doesn't use the '-' in there SMS texts. So this is a 'feature' of the Sony, and is there anyway around it?
 
Every phone I've known has always used the generic :-) for smiles. (colon hyphen, right bracket)
It's not something you can turn off nor is it a Sony thing.
I have no idea why that's happening nor can I help.
