Verizon has had a few outbreaks like this & I've received a few one-off spam txt msgs as well.
It has nothing to do with you giving or your number.... Basically a spammer will try random numbers @vtext.com and wait to see what doesn't get bounced back as undeliverable.
You must bear in mind that we aren't talking about one dude doing this by hand in his basement.... Spammers Make use of bot-nets / zombie machines to do their bidding for them.
Evil bastards.
