Help SMS text notification gone silent

Where has my SMS notification tone gone on my Galaxy S2?

I updated to ICS LP8 and I ceased to be notified of the arrivals of texts (although it would alert me sometimes). I went into 'settings' and selected a different 'notification' sound, but still the same problem.

Ive now updated to ICS LPF and the probem still exists. What's happened? How do I deal with this? As ive said, it does work sometimes, but only for 1 in 20 texts. What do I do to get it working again?

My notification sounds disappear too sometimes. I have noticed that sometimes when going to settings>sound>volumes, that the notifications option is at zero, even though i didn't change it.

were the notifications sounds moved to sdcard or a folder recently? you'll need to restate them in your txting app just in case.. then alter the sounds in your android settings for default sounds for overall use by other applications.

Hi there

ICS support less sound file types than GB.

For example, the WAV file type no longer works.

I faced the same problem. I had my favorite SMS sound ,which I used for almost a decade. After the upgrade it didn't work. I check the file. everything was ok, but it wouldn't play. So I open ASTRO folder explorer, found the file and try to open it with Music Player, this is when little pop up box came up and said "Format Not Supported". I tried with few other wav files, same case. Once I changed to MP3, it worked right away.

I fixed my issue with the notification sounds disappearing; turns out it was an app i downloaded that silences the battery full notification sound (can't remember the name of the app - sorry). Anyway, once i uninstalled it, my notification sounds for texts etc now stay put.

I'm having this problem too, and I really don't know what to do. It won't make sound or vibrate. I'm using one of the default sounds, so there shouldn't be a problem with the file. I mostly just want it to vibrate. Does anyone have anymore advice?

I had the same problem. One time I totally reinstalled everything to factory settings and then it came back. Today I noticed again that there was no sound when I received an sms or an email. Checked all settings and they were correct. I shut off my phone and turned it on again...something that I rarely do. Sounds came back. Try it, you never know!

This happened on my wife's Note. All settings were ok, but notifications were pretty much silent (they were very quiet)

A reboot cured it, and no trouble since.

I got my shiny new Galaxy S3 a couple weeks ago, and so far I love it. Until this bug surfaced... I noticed that my SMS notification sound was getting cut off when I received a SMS from a particular person. So I put my troubleshooting hat on:

  1. sounds were not muted
  2. reboot did not cure
  3. no odd applications were running
  4. the sound file works fine in the preview
  5. message notification settings appear ok
  6. the problem did not happen with every recipient, just one
So, thinking what was different about this one recipient, there were a high number of messages between us. 200 to be exact, which was the threshold at which the phone would automatically Delete old messages.

:) I raised the Text message limit to 500-- PROBLEM SOLVED! (well, problem averted)

 It seems that when that limit is reached, the process in which the phone deletes the old messages is causing the SMS notification to get chopped off.

Is this affecting anyone else?

Thanks to jbutkus for his post. Most SMS received from my wife would come in without a sound notification, and sometimes with the sound clipped, but SMS from other senders would be fine. Deleting old messages to/from her has cured the problem.

This has been bugging me for weeks and every other post I could find just told me to enable notifications.
