SMS texting app for a tablet

[newandtab]

Is there an SMS texting/messaging app for an android tablet? My tablet has hardwired ethernet connectivity and no SIM card. Would such a thing still allow me to Tx/Rx SMS via internet? What does Heywire use? GSM or Wifi?

Looking forward to all expert opinions.
Thanks in advance.

In short, do I need wifi connectivity on my tablet for any of the existing SMS apps like the Heywire?

Thanks.
