Sms

Trying to get to grips with my first Android phone and the SMS functionality is confusing me a bit at present.

When I open the Messages app it seems to group my message history into conversations, showing the last message from each one which I can then click on to see the conversation history. Will every message I ever exchange with a specific contact be shown in one of these histories, so I end up with one entry for each contact?

Next question is the big Messages window that appears on second screen from the left by default. This appears to show the last message I received from whoever but, beyond that, I can't work out what on earth it's for or does. The window often has something like "1/2" at the bottom as if there are a couple of unread messages but this persists even if I've read all my messages. It also has greyed out icons at the bottom two corners, one looking like a trash icon but neither are ever available. Is this app pointless and should I just remove it?

Lastly, I often get a green number against the Messages icon, which I presume means the number of unread messages but I often still see this even if I've read all my messages.

If anyone can offer any hints or tips on using SMS on the Desire I'd appreciate it. Are there alternative apps for managing these that do a better job?

Try Handcent which makes the conversation experience a lot easier.

Yes, all messages will appear in a conversation thread for each contact.

Yes, I think this is generally preferred over the old way of doing things.

This is a widget. You can remove widgets from the screen (this will not delete the widget/app from your phone) by long pressing it and dragging it to the bottom. You can add widgets by clicking on the + on your homescreen.

Basically with the messages widget, you can cycle through your sms by swiping down, if you have more than one sms message, try it its pretty cool.

I would also suggest using handcent, it makes your messages look better :p

Thanks guys. Got the hang of the widget now - didn't realise you could flip up and down through contacts :) Have also downloaded Handcent which is much better.

I do like Handcent but I like having contact pictures showing up on my sms while on Handcent it dont display pix in the convos.

As a result of this thread I have installed HANDCENT but now I get messages twice and notifications twice - one through this and one through the original app. Do I need to uninstall the original app or just turn off notifications for it?
