Help SMTP addressing issue? not sure but....

Again, many thanks for the replies, I'm slightly stumped as to what I should do. I received the following from authsmtp -

"It sounds like you may be having problems with the Incoming (POP Server) and the Outgoing.

We have not tested the HTC Desire here but it should give you the option for a username and password in your Outgoing mail settings. This should be through the "login required" option in the Outgoing mail settings.

It should also give you the option to change the port through that screen. If you can see that we would recommend trying either 23, 26 or 2525

If you can not see this we would recommend contacting the company that you purchased the device from."

I wonder if it is an HTC specific issue, unlikely I think, but I certainly don't see the page they describe, the one shown on their web site.

What to do? I'm not sure how to examine the details of the incoming mails account, can someone help? If I have a look there maybe I'll discover something that will enable me to sort out an outgoing. I've looked at the 'settings' stuff but it doesn't give me any detail on what settings it is using to get me the mail.

Thanks again, Barry

It works o.k. for me I use several different incoming pop accounts but only one smtp outgoing service for all of them. It is accessed with a username & password. The phone goes away & checks (pings?) the pop & smtp every time I set up an account. I suggest that maybe your smtp provider is not answering the ping.

Why not set up the account with another smtp & see if you can subsequently edit the settings to use your paid for smtp? I suspect you will have tried this!

Thanks, I use a similar system on the laptop, I have several email addresses and one outgoing smtp (authsmtp). I use a program called mailwasher on the laptop to sort out the dross, spam, etc., it searches all the addresses and delivers the results. Works fine. Pity I don't seem to be able to set up something similar on the HTC.....

Maybe I'll try to set up one of the accounts on it, not my regular one, and see if it works. If I cannot use authsmtp it will be a bummer.

Here is an idea:

I use spamcop to despam all my incoming. It will pop any number of mailboxes. It does this offline & forwards the cleaned mail to any address or you can pop it from them. There is a web interface for checking & whitelisting. You also get a password-authenticated-smtp to use with your Spamcop log in & p/w. It costs US30 per year. I use this smtp on my laptop, notebook & desire.

Barry,

Please list the setting you have got on your Incoming and Outgoing Settings. For instance I see (drop the keyboard out of the way to make it easier to see):

Incoming:
Protocol
Email address
Username
Password
Pop server
Security type
Server port

And Outgoing:
Login required
Username
Password
SMTP Server
Security type
Server Port

What have you got ?

Incoming:
Protocol POP
Email address barry.xxxxxx@xxx.xx
Username barry.xxxxxx

Pop server pop.iol.ie
Security type none
Server port 110

And Outgoing:
Login required yes, ticked
Username barry.xxxxx
Password xxxxxxxx
SMTP Server mail.authsmtp.com
Security type none
Server Port 2525

What have you got ?

Filled in as requested.

BTW, I tried to enter a new account and got to the mail address and password steps ansd then the verification failed 'cannot connect to the remote server, check the netwrok settings and try again" So, what network settings does it want, I can connect to the Net without difficulty.
Thanks, Barry

Coincidentally, I stumbled across this just now.

Problem with SMTP Auth - xda-developers

Could well be unrelated, but it might be worth getting hold of the default Android email client anyway - if it then works, we know it's a problem with HTC's client, if it doesn't then we can probably rule out a handset problem.

Thanks, I had a look and the link didn't work but I did find a mail app called k9 so I downloaded it, set it up and it works!! So, it is a htc prob??

Thanks again, Barry

:o I did a final check before moving on to a vanilla version, checking everything, and (covered in embarassment) found a new passw for authsmtp!! I had completely forgotten the change... not having to do the inputs too often...

It works now!! :o

I am so sorry for the bother I caused. However, I learned a lot.

Bye, Barry
