Help So frustrated with external SD card!

jdpryce

Newbie
Galaxy S3 - Everything was fine until yesterday, when I saw the "SD card removed" message for no reason. All my music seemed to have vanished from my music player (98% is kept on my external SD).

I formatted the card, re-added all the music, and it's still not there! When I check my files, I go to EXTSD Card, then I see the "Lost" folder, and my "music" folder. I go into the "music" folder and I can see all my albums there, but when I go back into the stock music player, it can only find the 2% of the music that's on the regular phone card.

Please help a noob?

Thanks!

Welcome to AF, jdpryce!:)
I have moved this thread into the SGS3 forum so that others with the same phone can post their tips to help with this problem.

Is it normal to wait over an hour for a response? This is my first time using a forum like this. Getting an answer in a week won't really be that helpful, lol.

Hello hey how u doing. Welcome to the forum glad u chosen the forums . Sorry to say this but sometimes the help is associated with helping others it may take a while to answer but we will get u running within seconds .

Welcome jdpryce!!!
I had that happen to me not too long ago.
From what I understand, the S3 does have an issue sometimes with external sd cards.
The only thing I could do was to format it also.
What did you use to format the card?
What size/class card do you have?

It's a "CoreMicro" 16G Class 4 card. I have formatted it again through settings>storage>SD Card>Format SD Card, and I've re-added all the files and have restarted. The files are in "My Files", but they don't show up in the stock music player (or other music players).

Whenever thats happened to me ive powered off took out-put in sd card and booted up n it sees the card again.
I know youll have tried that and i dont know if its the reboot or the removal of the card thats fixed it (in my case)
Good luck with the solution mate and yeah sometimes u need to wait a while for a response, it depends on time of day, who's online and how common a problem it is but theres some clever cookies on here :)

P.s, make sure the folder youve put your music into (MyFiles app to find them) matches with the folder the music player is told to read from in its settings mate

Ok so your media scanner service isn't running. Have you done a battery pull yet? I.e removed the battery for a few minutes?

The hard-reset actually restored all of my music. I think I had backed up my phone a few weeks ago.. where might I find that?

My email address is the account my phone was backed up to, but how can I restore my phone with all my settings the way it was before the hard-reset?

Whatever was backed up, restores when you go through the setup wizard so anything not there now, isn't coming back.

Can't believe you did a factory reset for this. Was only a media scanner problem. All we needed you to do was force it to scan

Well I waited an hour, so I figured I'd start trying things myself. I'd never heard of a media scan, and still don't know how to do one. Why was I doing backups to my email address if I can't use it to restore my phone?

Gota love how its a well known bug.. sandisk will replace one of thier cards damaged in an s3 and they KNOW its the phone to blame yet samsungs response is basicly "well you should use a samsung sd. If not..... bye"
If thats thier attitude then they should change thier sd slot and card shape instead of being universal
(Just one of the reasons i think samsung are "evil" as google put it and ill NEVER buy a phone from them again no matter how much i love the s3.... principles)

Not to insult anyone's intelligence or anything, but our new member ( and it's great to have you here, BTW! :) ) might want to think of Android Forums as a bulletin board... where you post something and then we all come along later and see it. We're not like a chat room, where everyone sees everything at once.

I know patience is difficult and frustrating when your SD card just "vanished". I know I did (my current phone doesn't have one). Possible troubleshooting steps in the future might be to have a spare SD on hand to check. I don't know if you have that. Lesson learned: factory reset is almost the LAST resort to fixing a phone.

If you have a sufficient data plan (like oh, unlimited), then streaming your music from the cloud to your device via Google Play is an excellent alternative.

Hope this helps and have a great day :)

Backups through Kies, or Google, or...

"Backing up" to your google account is primarily to save your contacts and any apps that you have purchased, in addition to data in any google apps like GMail, calendar, etc.

That's what syncing Google does, check out the backup & restore option in settings. That does more. For better results, sync & backup via kies.
