the released source code from Sammy today change anything with the Froyo builds available to root too? Should I wait?

Not as of yet. If you are happy with what you have now stick with it. However "rooting" only gives you super user access, it doesn't automatically upgrade you to froyo, it is only the first step.

Yep, the only reason I'd root is to be able to get Froyo. Was wondering if the Froyo builds will change/improve now that the source code specific for the Fascinate have been released

Only time will tell. If you want froyo, do the research, understand the process and pull the trigger. The roms out there now are pretty gosh darn nice, I have been running them in one form or another since the day they released.

There is practically no difference between the source that was just released and the mesmerize source that's been available for weeks...so no, this really isn't very significant for the root crowd.

You can update to froyo without root. Just odin the file.
It is a little more involved than that. If you are serious about upgrading, read over the processes detailed in this thread. I believe some of the roms/kernals are slightly out of date but this will give you an idea as to the steps required. All updated roms are available with a little searching around the development forum at XDA.

I used odin to go from 2.1 stock to 2.2 rooted in one step. I assure you I've rooted dozens of phones.
Why do you think root is required to odin a file? You can odin a bricked phone. Doesn't matter whether an su command is in the system/app folder.
