So how long will it be until we see retina displays on Android phones?

Aka, 960 x 640 resolution screen standards for high end phones?

On a side note, after I put in my thread title, I saw this thread pop up lol:

DROID has Retina Display! - Android Forums

Haven't read it yet but thought is just post it anyway. And when I did play with the Droid and went to the browser, I immediately saw how Sharp text was on it and i didn't know what to think. It was really pleasant to the eye. (this was months back when I got to look at it)

About as long as it takes google to support the resolution. The max supported resolution for android is what is I. The dinc and evo.

it never will!

Because google/HTC/others dont need to call a high res screen some BS name to make it sound better than it is.

I just read that retina display IS NOT the same as visual retinal display.

Can somebody please give me a definition of retina display? Is it just some term Apple made up to describe the resolution?

apparntly 300 ppi (pixles per inch) is what the human eye can see from about 12'' away.

a retina display doesnt actually make any sense as a name...

Super Amoled is still far superior too this.

I also prefer super AMOLED to the new iPhone screen.
(We've known about the 960 x 640 res for quite sometime). and I just don't think it will look as good as super AMOLED. But what I had in mind was 960 X 640 super AMOLED (if possible).

@Mkeath

I thought the Droid had a higher resolution than the Evo and Incredible? How is 800 x 480 the max? Perhaps I'm missing something? I'm newb so I don't know how it all works.

Without magnification, the human eye can’t
differentiate detail in a print greater than 300
PPI. Depending on the printer, the general
standard today requires 300 PPI for a quality
print of a digital photograph.

The funny thing about this to me is how Jobs dismissed increased pixel count in cameras and then turns around and then trumpets increased pixel count in a screen. He then declared that its about the quality of the image sensor and said they have upped theirs. But what I'm missing is how they have upped the quality of their actual screen besides resolution. Its going to look better just as a picture looks more crisp on your monitor when you scale it down. But has the actual quality of the screen technology increased to match or exceed AMOLED? Does AMOLED have a limit on the DPI it can achieve?

Looks to me like Jobs has run into a problem. Theres some technology that he can't lay claim to or beat at the moment so he's resorted to rebranding common sense. The question isn't how long before Android devices have "Retinal Displays" but how long till Jobs finds a way to top OLED or bows down and uses it.

Has anyone seen the Moment (or any amoled screened phone) and iphone 3gs side by side before? if so, which looked better?

Mobile OSs only support specific resolutions. I am not sure why but that's the way it is. 800 x 480 or 480 x 800 depending on the orientation. I believe most tablets use 480 x 800.

i am asking a real question here:

can you really compare the retina display to something like super amoled?

the way i understand the retina display is that it is more about the fact that engineers were simply able to put more pixels closer together. while obviously this is a "new" type of display in certain terms, the iphone itself is simply led backlit, where as the something like a super amoled display actually uses different hardware and technology to power the display.

Retina is an LCD display with a high pixel density. That's it. And amoled uses LEDs as pixels so there is no need for a baclight. Don't innoculate yourself on apple's shit when they tell you it's chocolate.

Retinal Display is just a fancy way of saying high resolution device.

The human eye cannot discern anything above 300 ppi and since the iPhone has high resolution on a small screen, it fits that bill.

How long will it be? Maybe 1-2 months lol.

He actually had a true point about that. Given a specific sensor size, larger (and therefore less) pixels will gather more light for a given gain. This will produce far less noise. A higher megapixel sensor at the same size will produce for more noise since you need to crank up the gain in order to collect the same amount of light.

That is why some old 8mp cameras will blow away todays 17mp cameras in terms of image quality.

That really depends on your definition of superior.

Super Amoled still has better Contrast Ratio,Viewing Angle,Brightness,True Blacks and its still superior in sunlight.

It should still be more power effienct as well considering it does'nt use a backlight.

It does appear that Samsung Galaxy S is the most future proof of all the phones. I don't know if anyone else can even have a super amoled screen.

Does anyone know the exact pixel density of the LG Ally? (It has a screen size of 3.2" and resolution of 800 x 480)

I don't know the formula to get the pixel density
