So I got an Amazon Dot....

Big Brother is always watching. Anyone ever read the book "1984" by George Orwell? It's amazing how much of that book became truth. But being the ever industrious species that we are we went beyond spying TVs. We built spying phones, fridges, computers, thermostats, etc. We are in the age of "alternative facts". You are constantly told what you have to think, say, and do to be patriotic. Cameras are everywhere. It was a very intuitive book.

Read F.451 a few times in high school, and a few summers ago too, its pretty scary how today's future crept up on us pretty fast...

Dude!

Governments aren't that smart. They work by committee.

The Amazon Dot is cool but the Google Mini is a better design.

Amazon upped the game with that Spot though... I wonder if they can work together!

Still having fun with the dot. Latest one to really crack me up was asking Alexa to pretend to be a villain. I really need a different hobby

It occurred to me this morning that if I could ask Alexa to pretend to be a villain that she should also be able to pretend to be a superhero. It wasn't quite as funny but still amusing

Do not ask Alexa to open the magic door unless you have over 45 minutes (I gave up at that point) that you don't need back

ok... this week...
Amason's Audible service.. is offering a deal..
prepay 1 yr.. get extra credit.. and a free Echo Dot.
or $50 off on an ECHO.

i am considering it... is it worth it?
should i get the ECHO or DOT?

my opinion is.. $50 Echo.. i get a good Bluetooth Speaker that does more than a basic speaker.

I have the Echo Dot. It's a decent speaker but I don't think I would call it good. Mine is bluetooth'ed to a separate speaker for better sound. It's a fun device and does many basic things like tell you the weather or various trivia things but trying to get it to play some of your favorite songs can be a test in patience. I know there is a way to get it to play files you have on your computer if the computer is also bluetooth capable, but I haven't gotten that far yet.
Final opinion is that it is worth the $50 but not much more. Fun but will not be much of a workhorse.

thanks for the info on the Dot.
i can see that music would not be great on it. .. small and shallow device.

I was refering to the big brother.. the full .. ECHO.
if i do the 1 yr membership.. $100.
includes 12 credits instantly. 1 credit = 1 book
a free Echo Dot.. OR get a deal on the .. ECHO
ECHO is $99.. but on this deal.. i get $50 off of it.. making it only $49.

i think for $50.. the ECHO.. would be a good bluetooth speaker

Deal is good till March 25.
if anyone likes.. audio books.. this Audible service is great.
I used it for 6 months .. 2 yrs ago. liked it.
and this deal sounds good.

As usual, there are those that prefer different versions but from what I have seen the Dot seems to be the front runner. It does help with little things and is fun to play with but I don't know that ANY of them are really that useful yet

For whatever reason, the dot (echo) works with more smart devices than the mini (Google home/assistant) for now. Not sure if it's easier to program or Amazon pushes harder for manufacturer compliance to their API. The mini, backed by Google, seems to do better with general information and looking things up, so it really is going to depend what you will be using it for.

There are a few things neither do like opening smart locks or garage doors, but that's deliberate. You can lock/close them, just not open them.

Both the Amazon Echo Dot and therefore the Google Home mini represent reasonable ways that to do a smart speaker in your home. Using nothing however together with your voice, you'll play to play music, get news updates, set timers, and control in style smart-home devices.
They can also answer an ever-increasing type of queries. If you’re shopping for your 1st smart speaker, we think the Echo Dot may be a slightly higher value; however, lots of “it depends” concerns are involved in that recommendation.
The main difference between the Echo Dot and the Home Mini is that both are the platforms enable them to work their magic. Echo Dot runs on Amazon‘s Alexa platform, and Home Min runs on Google Assistant

Ok... But what is the higher value it gives me?

Also, who is the we of Which you speak?
