Root So what do you guys use to remove "bloatware"?

Pretty much what the title says. I recently rooted my phone(And then a whole bunch of stuff, but I flashed a stock 2.2 rom with root) and I'm looking for remove the sprint apps, media hub and other that aren't needed.

Titanium backup I think is 1 of the better ones because it allows freezing the apps, & the backup & restore, I hav not seen anything better myself; but u can use Astro to remove as well or My BackUp Pro...

Those are jus the ones I kno & use...

I rooted and upgraded to Froyo 2.2 (TrulyEpic). This ROM removed all/most of the Sprint bloatware that you speak of. I just had to reinstall Sprint Nav and Swype. That's all that I wanted.

You can do it manually through ADB, do it for free with the SDX (not sure of the exact name) but my preference is still Root Explorer.

+1 on Titanium. It's nice to freeze an app and see if it causes any other issue before actually deleting it. If it does cause problems with anything, you can just defrost it and you're good to go.

my 2 cents flash quantum rom 2.1 it doesnt carry all bloatware and the dev gives you the zips for sprint crap samsung apps and widgets you want if any or not its a really good rom i do suggest the stockemail becuz whatever he had on there just force closed for me

Do you know if freezing an app frees up the space that the app takes up on your phone's memory? I kind of figure it doesn't, otherwise freezing is to me just as good as uninstalling.

Freezing does not free up space, and just makes them inoperable. You can use astro file manager to back up apps(stores the apk's on your sd card, easy to reinstall if you wish later) and use sdx app remover to backup first then delete system apps. I use android system info app to identify what app is what and the name of the file to delete it with the sdx app. Not sure what something does don't delete it until you find out if is safe to remove. There might be an easier way but that is what I have found to work for me for now until I learn more. Good luck and hope this helps ya!

thanks! what i've done is used Titianium Backup to freeze a bunch of stuff. for some reason the option to save to SD card is there but not active on Titianium, but i have backed them up. i found several lists of the safe stuff to uninstall, and i went ahead on a deleting spree, haha. now my Epic possibly gets better battery life, and doesn't seem to get as hot as before.... not to mention lots more free space for apss i actually want

How exactly do you flash the zip files? Do I flash them the same way I flashed the ROM initially (through recovery)?

yes its basically the same without doing a full data wipe just wipe the cache and davlik cache not sure if its absolutely neccesary but i do just in case makes me feel safer

Excellent... also I hear that deleting some of Sprint bloatware that comes on a Epic can make it fail a OTA update if available... if that is indeed the truth, should I redownload all of the Sprint crap so I can get Froyo once released (haha) without any problems?

That is true (at least from the history thus far). Yes, you can always add the bloatware back in to do any of OTAs if you want.

Well, if you are rooted and willing to wait a day or so, the developers will have a version working for us root users.

Yeah I can definitely wait, probably wouldn't try this til the weekend as it will be my first attempt.

When an OTA is released, part of the check process is to search for certain items on the phone and if those items aren't on the phone, you can't complete the OTA. The version that the developers will release won't require those items and we'll be able to flash them like we currently flash ROMs.

Nooooooooooooo, I already knew that. I was thinking you were telling the user to wait a few days(that the OTA was already out), and that was what I was missing hehehe.
