finally we're getting somewhere
maybe not...

seriously i'd still like to hear an actual answer from anyone that's familiar with the subject

No that wouldn't be saving and restarting. You don't want to maintain a constant stream of data. That would instantly kill your battery. Well not instantly, but fast enough.
but if the widget is set up to update every 8 seconds then that's what it should do, regarless of if it's sensible or not (i suspect the description of that setting is just lacking and it's not meant to do that - oh, that'd be a fourth to my stated options)

The one thing about android that does irk me is the browser really does need some optimizing. I notice the phone will run smooth as butter for days even if I don't use the browser. But If I do heavy browsing poof theres all the ram.
opera mini 5 beta is even worse in that regard - luckily it's better in most other regards :)

Ok here's an example.

Say your running instant messenger.

Ok so I want to browse the web.

SO it pauses IM, and now your web browsing.

When you call it back up into active process, it will show the save state and THEN add the new data.

Also, when your tethering, if you go to your phone book, will that pause the tether?

It seems apple is picking and choosing what will be able to multitask, and what wont. who is apple to tell me, or any other consumer, what is worthy of multitasking on MY machine?

I am STILL waiting for an example of something you can do multitasking wise with Android you won't be able to with iPhone/iPad 4.0. I will be waiting....

Like I said, if you love apple so much, go get yourself an iPhone, and quit trolling an Android forum.

i'm assuming by "new data" you mean an im message that has been sent to you (?)
for that case they have push notifications, so you do get the message while browsing

i would think tethering ran as a service, hence no; tho' i don't know for sure
of course if you call someone the type of network will dictate whether or not you'll stay connected to internet, regardless of your device

i still don't see how this is so different from android (from a user's perspective)

in android, an activity's onPause method is called when that activity is sent to the background and onResume for the opposite, so an android process can pause-resume if it so wishes, or it can leave itself running in the background

while on iphone os 4.0 (again, afaik) the app's process is always pause-resumed on losing of focus, but any app can create a service that is left running regardless of which process is brought to foreground

yes, apple's way is technically more restrictive from a developer's point of view, but in practice, i can't think of a single scenario where a process would need to be left running in the background instead of a service

my news ticker changes headlines every 8 seconds....i opened my browser and played around on the internet for approx 2 minutes....when hitting the homescreen, my news ticker was still on the same headline....then i noticed my upload and download indicators in the my 3g symbol both light up and after 17 seconds, the news ticker started changing again.

isnt that just saving and restarting?

Are you, like, broken in the head?

My phone fetches, downloads and converts youtube clips into mp3/mp4 while Grooveshark streams, the market downloads several apps I queued up, and I browse forums on the browser. Shit, I can even tether while all of this goes on and torrent crap too. That's true multi-tasking, and that's why you need multi-tasking instead of pause-and-restart (and sorry, anyone who says "it's not like you can have multiple apps onscreen at once, so you don't really need multi-tasking" is made of pure asinine).

Watch the beginning of the video where he has 4-5 things running at once. They do NOT pause when he exits them. It is TRUE multitasking. So you can all shut up now, thanks :)

Problem. How do we know its not modified or just jailbroken? Until I play with one in a store, we don't know.

Also, you can't troll an android forum by promoting android

did anyone actually read my question? i have seen multiple responses from people, including one person asking me if I was "broken in the head," and yet my question has yet to be answered. i actually got flamed!?!?!? are you kidding me?

please re-read my QUESTION <------ question: as in, I am asking something and looking for someone to answer me by defining what I am asking for....

give it another shot:

i have a legitimate question. i havent read apple's tentpoles, not a programmer, never gonna download sdk or root my phone, can only tell you that API is a form of communication.

trying to get back on topic here, i just did a little test with my news and weather widget.....

my news ticker changes headlines every 8 seconds....i opened my browser and played around on the internet for approx 2 minutes....when hitting the homescreen, my news ticker was still on the same headline....then i noticed my upload and download indicators in the my 3g symbol both light up and after 17 seconds, the news ticker started changing again.

isnt that just saving and restarting?

also, i have to tell my news and weather widget how often to update, seems more like some sort of "push" to me.

now that you have read the question, again this is a question, i am not complaining about anything, I am not asking if something is wrong with my widget, i simply made an observation and applied said observation to the logic explained in this thread and so now i want to know.

what is different from what my widget does and save/restart, or WHY is my widget considered to be multitasking?

Give the man some credit he own a android phone, all he saying is the iphone can multitask now yes android been doing all that plus adding to your folder or create a new folder but nothing wrong with giving another phone its props..

Ok guys enough flaming this is getting out of hand. I personally know debates can get heated, but no need for name calling. Do we really need a mod in here to calm us down? We are all adults right?

If the iphone 4.0 is released with the tentpoles they disclosed, then no it is not true multitasking.

However they may very well have a joker up their sleeve. To say anything else is pure speculation.

it is just saving/resuming, not considered multitasking - see my previous posts for 4 possibilities (there are probably more i can't think of) for why the widget isn't multitasking

no it isn't - the os allows apps to leave services running in the background, that's multitasking (and this is at least the 3rd time i've said that on this topic)
and that's not speculation, that's straight from the horse's mouth
now wether or not these services are enough for every practical use-case is up for debate and i'd love to hear (seriously) some examples of what can't be done with this system as opposed to the more conventional, or "true" multitasking approach that android (among others) uses

Problem. How do we know its not modified or just jailbroken? Until I play with one in a store, we don't know.
guess we all have to wait for you to play with one in a store to get reliable information
