After years of having Windows Mobile phones and after all the press about Windows Phone 7 not really being as advanced, technologically, as the Android based phones or the iPhone; I opted for the Android based phone. The main reason for the Ally in specific is due to my XV6800 (WinMo) phone untimely death. The LG Ally was the choice due to my contracts being up and the total ending cost of two phones being 0$.

That I will give it - without a doubt. The girl I'm dating now has a Droid2 and I cannot use that keyboard quickly to save my life!
I should add that the physical keyboard and it's reviews were a big draw for me.

I came from the LG Chocolate Touch, by far one of LG's worse phones. I wanted to get a smartphone, but did not want to break the bank to get one. I liked the look and feel and of the Ally. At the time of purchasing it, I did not really pay attention to the specs of the phone, but it does what I want it to do.
It is a good phone, and a solid choice for anyone wanting to save money on a device.

I actually paid for my Ally. Think it was 40 bucks. This is my first smartphone and has been a good one. Ive always owned LG phones in the past and they always gave good reliablity,even through the mulitple concrete drops. I always considered LG to be the Toyota of phones.inexpensive and reliable. I like the qwerty keyboard,that was a plus. I had no clue about rooting,did some research and finally rooted a month or two after i bought the phone. Glad i did. The devs that work hard for this phone are awesome,they really come out with some good stuff. For a first smartphone,is it good? Yes. After owning it for a while,do i wish i wouldve saved up and bought a Dinc? Yes.

I also paid for my ally on ebay. 60 bucks but I wanted to 'play with android before upgrading (using my new in 2) if I didn't like it I could go back to my samsung saga wm6.1 or use my new in 2 and upgrade to something more powerful. I got a deal. without a contract they are going for closer to $100 on ebay. took 2 weeks to get one for what I wanted to pay.
i wanted a kbd. knew froyo would be available in a couple of months. and liked the 'feel' of the lg phones i have had. my samsungs always felt cheap.
I am still not 'sold' on it. native exchange support didn't work for me. and touchdown is only ok comapred to the wm6.1 implmentation.

I bought mine outright earlier this year (full price). It was the cheapest Android available (unless I bought a refurb OG Droid) and I wanted to test the Android waters as I jumped shipped from Blackberry after switching jobs (my new job doesn't provide a phone like the old one, so I'm free to choose my own!).
The experiment has paid off, as I've now gotten rid of my iPod touch and have convinced my wife to get rid of her Blackberry as well when her upgrade comes in February (which will really pay off, as we'll probably get some sort of buy-one, get-one free deal since I'm not on contract after buying my Ally at full price). Next go-round I'll look for something with lots of internal storage (the biggest downside to the Ally) and a bigger screen (I like the Ally's screen, but after playing with a DX or a Galaxy S phone, it's hard not to feel left out).
Overall, a very nice phone, especially after rooting.

Why the LG Ally?
Well first... Why a smartphone to start? ?
Well I've been in the role of deciding what "users" get for tech. One area I've just most people get what they want is cell phones.. Here is the choices the carrier has... pick... what fits your needs... My needs on cell phones have been very basic, make/receive calls, SMS as an alpha pager replacement. The carrier has always been my big bugaboo... I am VZW loyalist aka fanboi... and I only do CDMA. Regardless of how big iDEN is in my profession for other things. I despise it, mainly because of its interference and grief its caused me and others in my field.
Recently we decided we are going to have a agency wide policy for those owned by the agency.
1) NO RIM!
2) NO crapple!
3) ABSOLUTELY NO winmpmo!
That leaves Android.
We will develop any mobile applications, for Android only. Other development is just not even remotely possible, too cumbersome, too many hoops, too restrictive.
Another reason, on the IT realm of things... the world is only seen via Linux glasses. IT speaks, understands, and only uses and supports Linux, period. The cubeville and other lusers can suffer with wimptard. When it breaks or has issues its left to the windIoTs, they are a sub department, akin to the scum on my shoe, if that, to fix. As if it comes to the IT end, wipe, and Linux is installed.
So after deciding that only Android makes the cut... what to get...
For me... PHYSICAL KEYBOARD is a must, no ABSOLUTE. That left the motorola Droid Pro or the LG Ally.
I didn't really like the Droid Pro for a couple of reasons:
1) Price
2) motorolas BS on locking the NAND
3) motoblur
Next I already had an LG Decoy VX8610 so the LG Ally VS740 was in the sights, namely for its PHYSICAL KEYBOARD.
Throw in the fact that I got it for $FREE! Choice over, almost! I did some research on accessories as I am big on easy use chargers... the Decoy has pins for a drop in charger/BT speaker phone charger... The Ally has the Media cradle while not as drop in and charge easy its close, close enough. Throw in the Nav Mount item and DING! DING! DING!
Winnner!
So in summation:
1) Linux Based
2) PHYSICAL KEYBOARD
3) Accessories
SOLD!
LG needs to work on an Ally+ Pro taking the 5MP, from the LG Shine+ (Telus version of the Ally) or a newer better camera, more RAM, dedicated GPU. Something I would like to see on all Android devices is 802.11a 5.8Ghz support. We have tons of it! We prefer it, and we don't put in alot of 802.11b/g.
You've got 2 years LG....oh and VZW wheres the PTT software for the Androids? ? ? PLEASE ! ! ! !

Three things led me to get the ally -
1. Price - I'm a cheapskate
2. The keyboard - best on the market
3. The form factor - I like to carry my phone in my pocket more than in a holster and the Ally slides in and out nicely.
That said, I just bought a droid 2 off of Ebay. It meets 2 of my 3 criteria and has more oomph. I really like the ally (especially running the punisher rom) but wanted a little more memory and processing power. After I get the D2 and run it thorough it's paces, I'll try to report back on whether it was worth spending the money to leave the ally.

I needed a keyboard so I only had two choices at the time and all the reviews said the ally had by far the better keyboard. The ally being $200 cheaper was a bonus.
While I do enjoy my ally I must admit I have buyers remorse and if I had to do it over again I wouldn't.

My old phone (LG Voyager) wouldn't hold a charge for more than three hours. I was worried because I still had a year on my contract. I went to the Verizon store and found out that a new battery would be $50. Luckily, the phone that we use as the home phone, which we have no intention of upgrading, had an upgrade. They took the home phone's upgrade and put it on my number. I decided that I would go for a $50 or under phone, and there was the Ally. I love my Ally, especially after I put Velocity on it.

I tried today, and could not get past the verizon activation screen. I could not press *22890 to activate it as it allowed me only to dial emergency numbers.
I bought the phone with the understanding it was Page Plus ready, and obviously it is not!
Anyone programmed their verizon ally to page plus without going to a dealer and paying someone to do it?
