Soak Test

I just got an email from Motorola offering to take part in a "soak test" for the upcoming new update and to get it now.... How dangerous is that?

Are these soak tests of upcoming updates relatively stable, or am I just asking for trouble?

They are usually the final release candidate that they are preparing to push to everyone. The idea is to push it to a smaller group first to catch any issues before going full swing. They also want feedback on things that are working / not working. So it's up to you if you want to participate / help the process. Many are eager for the latest updates and don't mind being a troubleshooter. (And in fact, many of the people who go to these types of forums & are tech savvy make the best testers for a wide scale release).

I've been in a number of soak tests. There are generally no problems. Some end up getting updated during the soak test and the original is never released.

There was one that had a problem ... the released version had the problem removed ... the soak test people were sitting with the problem version for a few weeks and then it was corrected. This happened only once.

I think that soak tests are generally final software, but it's fair to say that there rarely have been issues. The biggest that I know of, last year's 4.4 update for the 2013 Droids, ended up "bricking" some testers' phones (but not everyone's.) Motorola had to help them get their phones back, some with warranty replacements. The soak test a few weeks ago for the VoLTE upgrade I understand didn't cause issues, but was reissued because the first one wasn't working properly.
