Help soft button back lighting question

elements

Member
Hello all,
I am not sure what that area is called where home, menu back and search soft buttons are.. soft buttons? OK anyway I can not seem to figure out how to get it to light up at night. Its seems to light up AFTER I have already played around trying to find what I need. It almost seems arbitrary when it is lit and when it is not lit. Gets a little nuts in a dark car. Is there a setting for that? If there is I cant find it. I have very few complaints about this device. I find it to be the most amazing thing coming from a black berry. This not being able to see where the buttons are does bug me. Any ideas on this?

Also how do you post from the phone ap? It does not have an area for the prefix but it will not let you start a new thread unless you chose a prefix.

Many Thanks

Your 4 bottom buttons don't light up when you hit the power button? Is that what you are talking about? Mine turn on right when I click on power, and I never messed with settings, that would be stock on mine...

How do you have to get yours turned on? I don't know if I am following correctly...correct me if I am wrong.

It turns on when I wake it up but then quickly turns itself off. It does not stay lit up so i cant see what I am doing at night.

Mine are on the entire time my backlight is on, and however long I keep the screen awake. Mine is set to turn off after 15 seconds of no activity, but until that they are always on.

sounds almost like your's is defective. I have never seen an option to customize the button back lights...I assumed it was all controlled by the same light source...but people here know more than me about these, see what they have to say.

Maybe mine is defective. I am noting that it goes on and off arbitrarily. I don't notice it much during the day. So let me get this right.... Normally that area is lit up all the time on everyone else's phone?

Hm, now I kinda see what you mean. Mine isn't on with my screen all the time like I said. But I don't see a pattern either of when it for a on and off. It's almost like there is a sensor somewhere I dont know about...

Anyone else?

There is definitely some type of light sensor, but I can't figure out where it is. I just ran some unofficial tests in my bedroom - moving it in and out of direct light - and it responds to light and darkness (turning off and on) accordingly.

The sensor doesn't appear to be at the very top, i.e. behind the speaker grill, so I'm pretty sure it's hidden behind the black part of the glass somewhere. I thought maybe it was hidden behind that strip of soft keys at the bottom, but that doesn't appear to be the case. I'm guessing it's somewhere on the sides, behind the black part of the glass.

****Edit:
I found it! The light sensor is behind the Verizon logo at the top, under the black part of the glass. It's extremely difficult to see unless it's directly under bright light and slightly angled, but there's a small, lighter-colored circle that almost touches the upper-left part of the big "V" of the logo and sits at the top edge of the black part of the glass (in such a way that it looks like it partially slips right underneath the grey bezel).

Yep u r right. If I cover the v with my thumb the soft keys light up. So maybe I have a defective light sensor. I would be hesitant to swap it out because otherwise this device is fine

The proximity sensor is right above the V on the front, in verizon. You can see it, faintly. it is a tiny little circle there...but I didn't think that was causing it...

I am going to just keep this one, for me it's not a big enough issue to do anything about.

I think that may be what is causing it, but normally when you swap out a phone they give you a refurb that may have problems worse than this so I will not do anything about it either

I had this problem on my droid 2, for some reason when I slid out the keypad it wouldnt always light up. I found that if you hold the sensor closed with a finger it would light the keypad up.

I think they mentioned that the new fix ota will fix this proximaty sensor because it seems to not function properly.
