Soft keyboard question

When not using the slide keyboard, and using the screen touch keyboard, the keys always show numbers and punctuation across top of keys, but WHY? It does not appear that you can actually type any of them until you hit the "12#" button at the bottom of the screen.
Are they there just to tantalize us?

I would love to see an addtional key that would allow a once-only use of the numeric/punctuation characters without having to shift in and shift out using the "12#" key.
Maybe even a three-touch toggle on the alpha-shift key, or maybe better, a long-press on the desired numeric-punctuation key.

Anybody got any ideas?
Any idea of who to suggest a coding change to make this happen?

If you long press the on screen keyboard, it will change to the number or symbol that is secondary on the key. I'm not sure that is what you are asking, though...

Thanks - it was what I was after, and I tried it and it worked.
Should have tried that before posting.

Wish there was a long video tutorial covering every aspect of these phones so we didn't have to bother folks with questions that have answers.
