Help softkey question/issue

I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing this behavior:

What is happening is that when I push the side button to light up my phone, I can sweep the glass (or move the puzzle piece) to unlock it and all the while, the softkeys aren't lighting up. They actually do not light up until I touch them. Once I touch one of them, it registers and they light up, but not until they are pressed do they light. I'm on 2.2 non-rooted (never rooted).

My wife, I kept on 2.1 cause I wanted to test 2.2 before making the jump on an otherwise stable phone. On her phone, you can hit the side button and as soon as you touch the screen to move the puzzle piece over to unlock the phone, the buttons light up. Immediately.

So my question is two-fold.

Has anyone else experienced this and does it have anything to do with 2.2?

So I found ONE other person reporting this type of behavior. Check out the 2nd to last post in this thread:

DJ05 and DL09

Obviously the last post is from me but I doubt I'll get any kind of answer from the person.

With help from a co-worker who has the same phone, I think we narrowed it down. Another one of those undocumented "features" that they like to roll out to us as "favors" :p

I'd be extremely pleased if someone could test these two scenarios to confirm (must be on 2.2 OTA non-rooted):

Scenario 1:
To make the softkeys light up when the screen is initially touched (to unlock)
-- First, go to settings > display settings > brightness.
-- Check the box for "Automatic Brightness" and hit OK.
-- Put the phone to sleep.
-- Wake the phone.
-- Touch the screen to slide (or the puzzle piece to unlock)
note that the softkeys will now light upon initial touch.

Scenario 2:
To make the softkeys stay unlit until they are touched:
-- Go to settings > display settings > brightness.
-- Ensure the box for "Automatic Brightness" is UNCHECKED and hit OK.
-- Put the phone to sleep.
-- Wake the phone.
-- Touch the screen to slide (or the puzzle piece to unlock)
note that the softkeys will NOT light up until they are touched.

I have 2.2 OTA unrooted. I have confirmed both scenerios with my phone. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for looking into this for me.

I wonder... if you have it set to come on at first touch (scenario 1 above), do your softkeys go off before the screen initially?

So to modify scenario 1:
-- First, go to settings > display settings > brightness.
-- Check the box for "Automatic Brightness" and hit OK.
-- Put the phone to sleep.
-- Wake the phone.
-- Touch the screen to slide (or the puzzle piece to unlock)
note that the softkeys will now light upon initial touch.
--*After unlocking, browse around on phone*
--*Keep an eye on the softkeys, do they shut off after a few seconds?* (before the selected 15, 30, etc. timeout setting?
