Software Update Question

Newbie
Do I need to be on 3G network when I do the phone software update? I am having trouble connecting to server when using wifi. It says "connecting to server" for more than 15 minutes and nothing happens.

If you have mobile data disabled, you will need to enable it to check for updates. If mobile data is on already, you may need to clear the data on the device management app. To do this, go to settings>Applications>Manage Applications, then press the option button to bring up the menu, choose filter and then select "all." Now scroll down to "Device Management" and choose "clear data" This helped me when I kept getting the "unable to connect to the AT&T server" error message.

What do you mean by "mobile data disabled"? How do I enable it?

It means if you used a widget or application to turn off your 3g connection, you need to turn it back on. Some people who have limited data plans do this to control their data usage when they are not on wifi. If you are not familiar with this information then it is likely you don't have to worry about enabling it because it is enabled by default.

^That.

Just try disabling wifi and see if your 3G icon appears. Then try connecting to the update server. Manually change the date forward 24 hours on your phone if your phone tells you to wait before trying the update again.

If you still have trouble, try clearing the data on the device management app like I said in the other post.

You can also get your carrier to disable data transfer altogether. This will ensure that no data is used. If this is the case, I suggest downloading KIES or KIES mini on your computer and doing a manual update. Good luck using those programs, both are supposed to be a beast, KIES especially.

Not necessarily. I specifically tried to get AT&T to do this during a trip to Canada and they said they couldn't.

I was informed of this through googling and this forum when I had the same question about a month ago. I guess its carrier dependent. I'm on rogers wireless in canada and I had them disable my data completely. I've never used any data since and I've traveled to the US multiple times since then.

In other words, if I use wifi, it has to be Kies. Software update on the phone is only for 3G. Is it correct?
