Help Software update service unavailable

Idk if this is relivent, but the Verizon rep that put a new Sim card in my phone told me that they use a new type of Sim card, maybe that was the problem?

New sim card did the trick for me as well.

I read somewhere that a new SIM card may affect Data/Voice reception. If this is true, I am concerned that my pretty decent reception will be worse after the new SIM.

Does the SIM card actually affect connectivity/Reception or is its sole purpose to get your device on the Verizon network (I have heard it can be for either of these purposes)

Just curious.

Hi, When I go to check for updates I get pop up titled "Service Unavailable" and below that it tells me how to check for system updates..

I have been seeing this now for a few days... Anyone else seeing this?

Wiondering if it is really down..

Just curious..

Thanks

Hey .... same prob. changed sim card and all is well.... Someone mentioned that they were using different cards.... for what it's worth... the bad one was white... the new one that worked was red .... don't know but all helps.... just change sim in store....

I did a factory reset and my s3 Verizon updated right away.
I did the update check before I entered any Google account info. So the phone was bare without play store updates on any applications. I am now on the latest firmware. Fwiw I am still using my original white 4g Sim card I've had for a couple years.

If I do a Factory Data Reset then I have to re-load ALL of my APPS, right? And do I have to reset all my preferences, wallpaper, etc?

If so, not sure it is worth it to MAYBE be able to get the update with a freakin brightness slider that I won't use anyway since I use Lux.

Yes you have to resetup all your apps and settings . It's a pain. But I wanted to make sure when the next update is pushed I'm ready for it. So I wanted to be sure my s3 can receive ota properly.

you shouldn't have had to wipe anything, OTA's don't change anything they just "UPDATE" you should have kept all your data and settings.

AN "OTA" shouldnt mess with any of your data or settings it just updates, a factory Reset isnt required.

The problem is on certain s3 phones like mine the ota is not available. Ever. Software update function does not work. You need a new SIM or factory reset your phone. Then the ota will download. This was the point of this thread. .

I have already done a factory Reset and it did NOT fix this issue. Haven't made it to the Verizon store yet for new SIM.

Went to a Verizon store today to get a replacement SIM card to fix this problem. They refused to give me a new one. They said there was nothing wrong with my SIM card and if it was the card I wouldn't have service nor data. They also checked the two S3 they have on display and their phones said "no update available."
He also told me that he's read about the problem on the internet and about the new SIM "fixing" the problem. Not quite the words he used but he was pretty much saying people on the were full of bull s**t.
That was a waste of my time. Sadly its the closest VZW store around me and it's 45 miles away.

the confirmed fix is to goto the verizon store. ask for your new free sim card. they will verify id so have your id card. took them 10 minutes and popped in the new sim. then took about 4 minutes to activate. now i got the patch. told the other stores that tried to tell me that its normal to have unavailable of my confirmed fix.

REPLACE THE SIM CARD to solve Service Unavailable error.

New radios and they took away the universal search feature. I think this is what they did with all the s3 on different carriers.
