My phone requested that I install an update of which I did. Now it is so slow, won't repond on most applications and I cannot access my text messages. Please help

shut it down pull the battery and reinsert it. Fire it up and check it again. If that doesn't work, do a factory data reset. If that doesn't work, take the phone to your carrier.

Another thing you can try is you're not yet ready to do a factory reset on the phone is to boot to the recovery menu and clear the phones cache.
