Help Software Upgrade Causes Problems

My Incredible installed an update two days ago which I think is the one listed as "Software number" in the Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software Information screen. The "Software number" is now version 3.26.605.1. Android version in 2.2.

Immediately after the upgrade was installed I had the following problems.

1. Many of my apps are gone. Their icons have changed to the generic icon and I get a message that "the linked program is no longer installed on your phone". These apps are no longer listed on the "All Apps" screen. These *MAY* be the apps that were installed on the SD card but I haven't verified that.

2. Many apps which are still installed no longer run. When launching the apps a forced close dialog is displayed. Sometimes I'm giving the option of reporting the error, other times the forced close dialog immediately disappears and the app is terminated.

3. I have been able to re-download and install missing apps but only some of them will work. Others have the forced-close problem described above.

4. Most of my data was lost. My contacts and pictures remain but almost everything else is gone. Most apps act like they are being run for the first time requiring new sign-in information and/or they display the first-run notification.

I can still access the internal and SD memory without any problems. My photos, some internal and some SD, are still there and accessible so it seems that the memory is working fine.

Any ideas what happened and how I can go about fixing it?

Thanks...

The whole update process in Android is far from perfect.

Really, it pains me to say this, but the very best thing you can do is to back up all you can, do a factory reset, then re-store.

Here's the tips for that from the Evo gang - hope it helps you, it did all of us.

Widget loss is pretty common with an update.

And sometimes - you can't see apps in the drawer, but it turns out, they're still there.

Best luck!
