Help *SOLVED* 2.3 OTA Update Failed "IP Previous Update Failed"

I saw that 2.3 was being released as an OTA update so I went to download it last night. The download gets to 100% then asks if I want to install update, I select yes then about 25% through the install it reboots goes back to the home screen and displays and error message saying that the update has failed "Updated failed or incomplete - IP Previous Update Failed Code 410". I've tried it several times, to no avail.

Don't know if it makes a difference, but I tried rooting the phone in the past unsuccessfully but have since restored it to factory settings at least twice. I double checked that I hadn't tried to root it again since the last restore and just forgot, but when I go to terminal and type in "SU" it says access denied. (which I think is the easiest way to see if its rooted)?

Any help would be appreciated. I might try doing a hard reset then doing the update but I'm hoping to avoid that.

Finally got 2.3.5 up and running.

I basically set it back to the original stock using ODIN. The above thread had everything I needed and all of the links still work. For STEP 1 I used the first link, the official Froyo. Follow the directions to a T - wait for everything to reboot and then try and download the GB update again. I hope this helps everyone else, it worked for me. It took me longer to download the update again than to actually complete this process.
 
I'm having the same problem. My phone was rooted so I put everything back in place that was frozen, etc. and tried the update and got the same error IP_PREVIOUS_UPDATE_FAILED. I restored to factory, did the hard reset, and have tried the update at least 10 times. I've been searching the forums for help but it seems that Verizon is just replacing people's phones with refurbished versions. I do remember that I had problems doing the Froyo update because I had frozen Bing and it was trying to update it but I don't think that's the problem this time. Any help will be appreciated.
 
yeah i just tried the hard reset via the "Turn off, hold down volume/power button, wipe/reset method" and am getting the same error message.
 
My Fascinate did the upgrade and now is hung on the Samsung screen. It won't reset using the power button and down volume button. I can pull the battery but when powered back up, it still hangs on the Samsung screen. Any ideas or suggestions?:mad:

Thanks, I had tried this at the Verizon store and it would not work. Verizon washed their hands of the problem since it was not under their warranty. I called Samsung, gave them the MEID # and it is under their warranty for two more months. They send a UPS label and I sent the phone to them. :)
 
Thanks to all the great info here, I was able to turn a paperweight of a Fascinate into a working phone again in about 30 minutes, instead of sending it off to Samsung for a week. Maybe next time Verizon will do a bit more testing before releasing their next upgrade. I do feel bad for the average joe that doesn't have the technical background to fix it themselves.
