Help [Solved] Upgrading with Kies. Solution: ODIN

jboy1987

Newbie
I am trying to upgrade the sgs2 firmware with Kies (Win7 PC), but have run into problems.

First problem [solved]: The phone would never connect, because the MTP driver would not install. My solution: Uninstall the MTP device in Device Manager, then plug in the phone in usb debugging mode. A lot of new drivers will install successfully. Then unplug, turn off usb debugging and plug in again, then it worked for me. ([Solved] USB not working (MTP restarting))

Second problem: The connection to the PC is lost before firmware upgrade begins. Upon connecting to the PC, Kies will tell you an update is available. Then Kies asks you to make a backup of contacts, settings and so on. I did that, but after the backup (successful) the phone is disconnected from the PC for a few secs. Then it reconnects by itself, and I am back at square one: "A new firmware update is available!". I tried to skip the backup, still the same thing happens (disconnection and reconnection after closing the backup prompt).

I have come to really hate the Kies thing. Why can't it be just as simple as my old Desire with OTA updates??

I would really appreciate help with this. I have searched, but mostly found other problems or problems related to sgs1. Thanks in advance!

Kies worked perfectly for me. Updates and sync with Outlook. I guess you are using the latest version but if so, I would delete Kies and reboot my computer. Then re-install the latest version of Kies and try it again. It can't hurt. Good Luck

Ok, I tried reinstalling Kies. Got it connected to my phone. The new firmware message appeared so I went ahead and this happened:

"Data backup cannot proceed because of an unexpected error. Please connect the device and try backing up again."

Kies then skipped the backup. Ok. It proceeded with the two following messages while downloading:

"Downloading firmware upgrade components"

"Preparing firmware upgrade components"

Then disaster:
Windows crash report: "FirmwareUpdate is not responding. Windows can search the Internet for a solution... blahblah."

There's always another problem it seems. Any ideas?

Thanks steslatt and Karen. Odin did the job.

Confirmed by the evil lord Kies himself:
"This is the lastest firmware.
PDA:KF3 / PHONE:KE7 / CSC:KF1 (NEE)
"

Yay!

And an alternative to Odin is Heimdall, a multi-platform opensource application. There's at least one thread over on xda-developers devoted to it.
