(marked solved) see bottom post

wifi not using connection to router unless I turn on airplane mode in phone.

LG Stylo 4 Plus, stock ROM, no mods.
router is SBR-AC1750, connected to comcast @ 200Mb
in router, set up wifi connection over 2.4Ghz called xxx
In phone connect to xxx.
Ookla speed test app says maybe 5Mbps
Turn on airplane mode,
re-turn on wifi connection to xxx.
Ookla says 37-40Mbps.

What am I doing wrong.
It is as if it is using/trying to use OTA, - even though the SIM is removed for this test!!!

Thanks.
Many times.
EDIT: I found that if I use 5G instead of 2.4G I get a speed of 137Mbps. Why such a difference??? (distance is always 2-3' from router) router set to 2.4: g,n ; 5: a,n,ac

nite.

well 2.4 ghz travels farther at slower speeds while 5ghz will travel faster at shorter distances. 3-4 feet is not very far so 5ghz will always be faster.

yeah, but such a difference?
Tomorrow I will try different settings of the 802.11, for 2.4G, and see if that makes any difference...

nite. gotta go stack zzzzz's

followup. I did play with 2.4Ghz setting and got the best with g,n and 40Mb but only about 30Mbps.
Switched back to 5Ghz and immediately got 105Mbps.
So, I don't understand it, but I guess this is solved...
