some advice for my s3

fuzi

Newbie
I have an gs3, not rooted, stock, with 4.1.2 android updated with keis. I need some advices about it. Should i upgrade it, should i root it? Anything about it? Thank you.

i always root my devices so im biased,i say root.main reason is you have full control of your phone and can customize to your liking..seems to me mostly all problems posted in forums can be avoided or fixed via rooting...now with the recent update 4.4 kitkat things seem smoother but when 4.3 these forums were flooded with complaints...if you do root research and read read first

Agreed.
Root your phone - Even if you put a touchwiz based ROM back on. You'll find the devs of custom ROMs are so far ahead of the official releases and so much faster to react to bugs that you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Just to reiterate what was said in the post above...do your research first and then read how to root your phone again; ask as many questions as you need to in the relevant root forum for your phone.

International S3's are different to the carrier specific US ones and if you try the wrong rooting process you'll be in a world of hurt!!

But don't worry, the S3 is one of the easiest phones to root; Think the last one I did in Odin took 13 seconds.

So i should root the phone with odin, and after i should instal cyanogenmod?
I am looking to those forums with root. I am so confused, idk what to do..what to download. Can you guys help me? I will give u all the infos about my phone.

First up we need to know what model S3 you have: Settings > About Phone> Model Number.
And also your carrier or if it's an international S3 (i9300) what country.

CyanogenMod is not touchwiz (unless they do a TW varient?); so don't worry about specific ROMs for the moment.

Is there anything in particular that disappoints you about the phone? Something in particular you wish was improved?

Either way, rooting it is the first step to gaining full control. I, too, have 4.1.2 on the SCH S960L through Straight Talk. Not sure of your exact model, yet.

I did the "one click root" with Kingo. Then I used a CPU "tuner". Antutu CPU Master to be specific. I changed the scaling from ondemand to msm-dcvs, which is for Qualcomm. No overclock. I still gained a lot in benchmarks and the snappiness of my phone was very noticeable. Also you can set what frequencies you want it to scale between.
There's more to do than that, but just naming one thing you can look forward to.

I saw that there are things like, working smoother, new features..my phone works fine, the only thing where it responds with a bit delay is when I enter to contacts. So idk what else. Is 4.3 or 4.4 much different than 4.1.2?

I would say update first so you have the latest modem, then root. You can not just flash the modem later, you will have to revert back to compleat stock or you will hardbrick. But then you also cant go back to stock 4.1.2 rom if you decided you do not like the change, or you will brick.

dont update your phone you will get knox bootloader which will render your warranty useless

Everything we are talking about will, and my warranty with knox tripped was just fine.. Besides that thats not why you hear people talking about knox.

Yeah it is. Anything previous to 4.3 when you root it you can reset the flash counter with triangle away app... As far as knox its used for two reasons one is for companies to have secure phones for their employees, secondly the bootloader part of it has yet to be cracked yet by devs to reset the flash counter therefor voiding warranty

OP is asking about rooting, so clearly he is not to concerned about his warrenty. Even if we get the ability to set the flag back to zero, that does not magically mean you did not void your warranty. Even with flags tripped on your phone, they still might honor your warranty. As I said before, flashing/rooting will void your warranty regardless of knox.

It will void your warranty but prior to Knox triangle away would reset the counter and until Knox is cracked that's the issue.

I have asked the OP for phone details earlier in the thread...lets wait and see.

until Knox is cracked that's the issue.
Knox being cracked is not that issue, that sounds like fraud. If you are worried about your warranty you should not be rooting period. Having a tripped knox flag does not mean your warranty will not be honored.

The details you asked for. About the warranty, I don't know, I bought the phone from a friend, not from shop. The phone was bought from Orange. And again, the reason I asked you about updates and everything is because I heard it works more smoother. I wanted once to update the phone to 4.3 with keis, but I read a lot of bad things about it.. And yes, I would like touchwiz. And i tried updating it from settings, about device, software update. Nothing happends when I press it, and I'm connected to WiFi.

Rooting my S3 was the best thing I did with the phone (I did wait until I had a Nexus 5 before trying it though)

Read up a lot on the process is my advice if you decide to go for it, I was never concerned about the knox thing but my phone is well past the warranty stage anyway.

@the OP

You have the international version of the S3 - Probably the easiest to root.

Rooting gives you more controll over installed software / apps. Gives you access to try different ROMs from pure Android completely stripped down ROMS (Lite Roms) to ROMs ported from other Phones (MIUI; S5 ; Nexus) or just plain old Samsung TW (which is stock) but with the annoying samsung apps taken away; if you want.
Beyond that there is the ability to customise everything from buttton; notifications; Halo; Pie; multi screen; dual boots; CPU timing and all the fun stuff....but the key here is IF YOU WANT!! It's not what the manufacturer thinks you want or need.
We have a great root forum here:

(International) Galaxy S3 - All Things Root - Android Forums

so get on there and ask your questions about the root process.

Here's a pretty good guide for your version:

Why is that? What's so different about it?

I prefer the stock android experience and you'd be surpised how much Touchwiz bogs down what it still a great phone even 2 years on.

It's now a secondary phone I would have been less eager to replace had I tinkered with it before getting the Nexus 5 (Don't get me wrong though, the N5 is bloody immense and I don't regret getting it at launch)

Also being able to make a full backup, play around with other ROMs and always go back to a stable setup I've enjoyed previously is what seals the deal.

so if i root now, i'll be able to put for ex. kitkat on it?
And I read something about unlock problem after 4.1.2..;( is there something like that. I mean, after rooting, should I be able to update it to 4.4.2 Kitkat?

The link you gave me, says down there "That’s it – your Galaxy S III GT-I9300 is now rooted on the latest XXEMC2 firmware" My build number is different. I"m just concerne about making my phone a brick..

Man, ofc I don't think I rooted my phone only by accesing the link. I read a comment down there about that different number and a guy saying he bricked his phone.

the best thing about rooting is you can make a nandroid which is a complete backup of your phone, which is good incase your phone ever screws up you can restore it to a point and time when it worked good..if you dont already know when dealing with customer service there only response it seems to whatever problem you have is to do factory reset, with being rooted you dont have to worry about factory reset and losing all your app and data on phone because as long as you make a nandroid you got it all saved

if you cant find info here on the forums to root your phone you will wanna search xda forums as well
