Help Some SMS not being received

I live in an area of town where my phone is always struggling to keep a few bars on CDMA (I dont even enable LTE because I can't seem to connect at all, despite my town having it). It seems like when I'm at home I only receive half of the messages that people send me. After a while they ask me if I got their last message and I didn't.

Sometimes I have 0 bars but its usually 1 or 2 bars. But either way, the messages never seem to show up, even when I get better signal.

Is this a Verizon problem? Or a Galaxy Nexus issue? I'm not rooted and I'm running the stock 4.0.2. I've been considering trying to flash better radios but I don't really have the time.

I had a problem this weekend with some texts not being received or receives a long time after they were sent. Actually caused an argument between my wife and I.

I had this issue on Handcent when I first got my phone, but with MMS. Switched to Go SMS Pro and haven't had any problems since.
