Help Somehow to make calls/texts without using minutes?

I have an LG Ally. I am constantly getting in trouble for making the family plan minutes go over. I have Google Voice, Google Talk, and downloaded Sipdroid and netTalk because of reading a post but I honestly get confused. Can I get some detailed steps for any ways that I can call/text without it using minutes? Thanks in advance.

have you heard of groovip? it does all that for you. I used it when i didnt have my phone activated. I has come a long way and works great.
