Root Someone PLEASE enlighten me

PrinceCorwin

Android Expert
I'm sorry but after weeks of rooting my spectrum and following all of the threads here, I still don't get it. All I've done is make sacrifices (tethering, bluetooth, glitches, lag time, etc..) and haven't percieved a SINGLE benefit. I desperately want to understand the rooting frenzy but I just don't see the plus side. Can someone please tell me what rooting does for me that wasn't already possible before root. I had tethering, screenshots and no lag time before root. Is it just a matter of pride to be able to freeze or delete the bloatware. They never caused me a single problem before root. I just didn't use them. And I already have a backup of all my paid apps so using Titanium Backup is really a moot point for me. And being able to Nandroid doesn't matter if you're not rooted because I'll never brick my phone. I'm not being negative, I just want to understand. WHY SHOULD I CONTINUE WITH THIS PROCESS?. Someone please enlighten me.
Regardless of whether I get a satifactory answer to this dilemna, I DO offer my appreciation and respect to the devs who make the rooting and unlocking possible... I'm just not catching the point of it all.

Welcome to owning a spectrum. Now imagine dealing with this shit for almost a year. ;)

All I can tell you is to embrace the ICS stock build or wait for cm9 to be completed... Cm9 is great on the device and resolves most of the gripes we have with it... But we have to wait for the devs to crack data connectivity on a non-stock rom.

And once CM9 is ready, what will that do for me that I can't do already with a nonrooted device? Please be specific.

They offer more personalized customization, you can use apps like setCPU to get better battery life, and once the kinks from the alpha builds are worked out, they almost always offer better performance. Bloatware, while it may look harmless, usually sucks up your RAM and is often infected with manufacturer spyware (for lack of a better term) that slows your phone down.

On a different note, the Eclipse rom that Nitro is working on is actually pretty dang nice. He's re-themed the whole thing in black so your eyes don't get burnt out of their sockets when it's dark. It also seems to be pretty snappy so far.

That all sounds good, but I still say that before I rooted, I had GREAT performance with zero lag time. When I clicked on a link, bookmark, app, etc.. the response was instantaneous. How much better could it get?! Now that I'm rooted, lag is rediculous! Using a custon ROM simply to get back to the performance level that I had preroot (bloatware and all!) seems to be defeating the purpose. And I know that bloatware sucks up RAM but if I have zero lag... then what's the harm?

P.S. I tried SetCPU.... all it did was EAT UP my battery with zero performance difference

Still unenlightened

I hope I'm not coming off as a troll... I SINCERELY want to understand the point of all this.

The lag sounds like a different issue than just rooting. Not trying to set your concerns aside but when I rooted and ran just rooted stock it was just as snappy as before rooting or more so. Have you removed any bloat? And are you still using SetCPU?

ok prince I'll try to shed some light on this topic for you because I think I understand where you are coming from. First off rooting isn't for everyone and depending on how you use your phone and how much of a geek you are about this stuff it might not be the thing for you. That said, here's some things to consider.

The experience you are having with this phone isn't going to be common with all. This phone lacks in a huge way as far as the amount of attention it gets from developers and the amount of tweaking and roming that actually goes on. We have still yet to have one fully functioning rom that wasnt built off stock, including while we had gingerbread. If we had a fully custom built rom like cm9 or aosp or some other you would see more difference in performance.

That being said though, to give you a good idea of what a rom can do for you, take your spectrum and go back to V4 stock on gingerbread, then root and it and put CWM on there and flash broken out 2.0 Some of us were here when that all took place live and let me tell you, there was a huge difference! AND I MEAN HUGE! Battery life was better, it charged insanely fast, you could overclock which made the phone snappy as hell, the whole experience just blew stock away. This phone could barely break 5000 in antutu when it first came out, and broken out 2.0 took it well over 7000. Some people even scored near 8000. you are talking about a huge increase in performance.

Things are in an awkward stage right now for the spectrum, give it time and you will see the benefit of rooting. As has already been mentioned, the amount of tweaks you can make while being rooted is amazing. You just have to learn what it is you want, and put it into practice. One huge benefit for us right now being on ics and having root with CWM is being able to get google now, which is JB only. I personally love google now and use it quite often now. I used it twice today to call places I don't have in my contacts and it saved me having to look up there number because i can tell google now to "call such and such place" and it just does it. No extra steps, no mistakes, finds the number instantly, and calls it for me. I did this while driving down the road. Good luck with using google now on stock ICS...because you cant :P

there are also other apps you can run on a rooted phone with cwm that you can't on a stock phone. Like a lot of the stuff that is being ripped off the latest 4.2 version of android and converted to work on older versions. Like the 4.2 keyboard, and camera, and gallery to give a few examples. You can tweak boot animations, status bar icons, change the system font more easily. You can use root browsers to go into the system folders and reconfigure files and delete certain things. Like I said before it's about how much of a geek you are about this stuff. Root just unlocks your phone so those of us who want to risk breaking it have that right. It gives you control and access to the phone you paid good money for. It's about freedom and choice.

Basically it's a hobby for a lot of us. We like to tinker and change things. Like I said before this is an awkward stage for the spectrum right now. If you really want to see the benefit of rooting then do what I said before. Take your phone back to v4, then put broken out 2.0 on it. You will see.

And once CM9 is ready, what will that do for me that I can't do already with a nonrooted device? Please be specific.

Cm9 is a more stable, better performing rom than stock. So you won't get random reboots, you will have a stripped down os without all the bloatware built into stock that you can't remove and you'll have a device that is more reliable. Cm9 is rooted, so you have complete control over your cpu, more cpu governors and you can sync the phone clock/time to atomic, not network, which is 10-15 seconds off with Verizon.

Basically, you'll have a device that performs like (but most likely better) most other devices do on stock ROMs.

And btw, if you altered your cpu with setCPU and it ate up battery, you did something wrong. I use the performance governor with 1.512 clock speed and don't see a drop in performance, when that governor is one of the worst to use because it maxes out the cpu and uses more juice.

Well to address one thing you asked.

Tethering wasnt allways available unless ROOTED,(and for the people not on share everything plan) rooted is still needed, but on latest v7, bugs still being worked out.

You entered into rooting at a stage of, NOT YET COMPLETED.
ONCE COMPLETED...
your benefits, will be everything you loved bout stock, n as well as all things ya n control of that ya couldnt efore

The ROMs were a HUGE performance increase before ICS, but I do see your point now. Right now it is hard to justify since we don't have established ROMS, but idealy you would have a variety of modifications to choose from, from themeing to performance. And you can get things like the JB keyboard... ;) I've had CM (7 at the time) on a tablet, which showed me what the Android OS can really be and now I just feel cheated by these watered down OS's that these companies "develop" with all their restrictions.

Thanx everyone for some clarification. Basically I get the idea that AT THIS MOMENT, there is really little for someone like me to benefit... I just have to wait for the devs to complete their ROMs. I checked out the Eclipse stuff and it looks like it will be something I'm interested in as long as I don't lose any functionality. I guess I'll just sit back and wait for the light at the end of the tunnel.

now imagine dealing with what? "welcome to owning a spectrum." now imagine dealing with what? i don't get your reply at all. if i picture myself getting a phone call from a telemarketer, then i get your reply. i picture you as the telemarketer calling me... oh wait, weren't you the one running the call center and telling everyone how to feel? weird.

Dealing with wondering why I bothered with the phone; reading his op, and given the extensive conversation about how unhappy all of us were before the ICS release, I figured that was fairly clear.

Don't worry about it MrB... I got your point!

FWIW, you can get a lot of the 4.2 stuff on stock + rooted without unlocking the boot loader and installing CWM. I'm running V7 rooted with working bluetooth, and have added Google Ears, Google Now, and the 4.2 keyboard with no issues.

That's what I'm doing now. I'm factory resetting as I type
