Help something is slowly using up all my app space?

CarsnGadgets

Android Expert
I have an XEU international, sim free SGS2 on O2, stock 4.0.4 non rooted.

I am about to do a factory reset to sort this out, but wondered if you had any ideas first?

this is the second time I have had to do this, because the same problem seems to occur after a while.

Basically, an app or a process is slowly using up all my free space. Without me installing anything new and with everything I can set to store data on the SD card eg. camera etc, I am losing a few mb per day!

I have cleared cache, used cleaner apps, uninstalled everything apart from essential apps. I cant see any directories that are full of temp files or anything.

Is there any way to tell what is using up the space? and stop it?

cheers.

Hi CarsnGadgets!

Yours, I'm afraid, is not a totally unheard of problem after upgrading. Sometimes, storage can be eaten up very rapidly and in other cases it can happen over a longer period of time. There are numerous reasons that this can happen, ranging from incompatible app's or settings from a previous firmware or a poor update/integration of said app's and settings during the update. Particularly, it would appear, if app's have been moved to internal/external storage prior to update. This is why I usually recommend a clean, "vanilla", install of new firmware which includes formatting internal/external memories and Factory Resetting the phone. See #1.2, here.

It is also not unheard of to receive a corrupt download of the firmware update, more usually OTA but also via Kies. This is impossible to detect unless you do a vanilla wipe. See, "Firmware update problems... what you can do!".

You could try clearing your cache as per Shotgun84's post, here, although this may only temporarily solve your problem and you may have to resort to a full, clean, vanilla, wipe and possibly a re-installation of your firmware, as described in my link. This is what a Samsung Service Point will do if you take it to them, as a matter of course.

Thanks Ironass, I just PM'd you whilst you were writing this reply, so you may want to just ignore my PM.

what would you recommend that I do? (which of the above)
ps. your 2nd link doesnt work?

Cheers for the help.

If I do a Factory Reset and a format of my internal and external memory, how do I then re install my firmware?

Jelly bean isnt available for the XEU variant yet is it? so I would have to use ICS?
ps. im not rooted.

is there a guide to doing this somewhere?

Thanks a lot.

Too late... already replied. This is why I do not usually reply to PM's and prefer to answer questions on the forum so that others may benefit!

My PM...

"Wi-Fi logs would be high up on my list of culprits for your problem but by no means, the only one.

However, to attempt to try and resolve/check that one issue, does require you to be rooted, as per the Dummies Guide. This will, of course, void your warranty.

The Siyah v5 kernel you mention is correct for ICS.

Being rooted does mean that you have greater access to your phone for backups and restores as described in post #2 of the Dummies Guide for rooting."

ps. your 2nd link doesnt work?

My bad. In a rush. Fixed now.

If I do a Factory Reset and a format of my internal and external memory, how do I then re install my firmware?

See, now fixed, post.

Correct! JB for XEU is currently not available. However, you can flash any JB firmware as per #1.7, of the, "Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide".

Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide

Right! Pub now! ;)

sorry another question...

Is this order correct:

Backup to PC
Format the internal/external storage
Factory reset,
Follow the root for dummies guide,
Titanium backup Nandroid backup etc.
Install Odin,
Install the 4.0.4 firmware from SamMobile using Odin

(??? do i need to be rooted to use Odin? could I just reinstall the 4.0.4 firmware using Odin without rooting???)

Did I miss anything?

And am I right in thinking that what you are saying is that I could use any i9100 JB firmware from SamMobile instead of the 4.0.4 firmware that I currently have? what about modem versions and things not working? I'm really sorry, but I dont completely understand?

cheers.

You seem to be confusing rooting with Fixing firmware updates with flashing a stock firmware. You do NOT need to be rooted to flash a stock firmware.

To root, follow the Dummies Guide, posts #1 and #2, for rooting.

To flash a stock firmware follow the post #1.7 in Dummies Guide for Jelly Bean update.

You can flash, as per #1.7 of the Jelly Bean update guide, any firmware for your model of phone. You must take into account language packs and regional differences, as per #1.1. I would recommend Nordic Countries firmware, LSN, for UK phones.

OK, just an update.

I have formatted the USB storage and SD card, and factory reset.
I then Flashed the official 4.0.4 firmware from SamMobile using Odin.

I now have most of my apps re installed and my phone set up as before.

So far it seems to be behaving, and I have about 400mb more space.
I will keep a close eye on it and will report back if the problem re occurs.

Am I correct in thinking that although I have flashed using Odin, that because it is the official 4.0.4 firmware, I should still get OTA updates? or will I now need to flash updates using Odin from now on?

Cheers.

From #1.7 of the, "Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide", referred to in posts #5 & #8 of this thread...

This is for competent users and will void your warranty, if you have one, by flashing any firmware other than that intended for your original CSC code as well as preventing future updates through Kies or Over The Air, (OTA).

yeah, thanks, but that's why I asked, It wasn't clear to me what that means?

the firmware I have flashed is the same version as the one I had prior to doing it, so does that make it "intended for your original CSC code" and therefore I should still get OTA updates and still have my warranty?

sorry Ironass, just wanted to be sure.

cheers.
