Sort of Ctrl-Alt-Del in Android

Hi guys

If we restart an Android mobile with the Vol-Up, Power & Home hard keys, we go into "factory data reset" mode with 5 options that can be selected by the Vol-Up/Down hard key.

The options list are (correct me if i am wrong)

  1. Reboot
  2. Backup & reset
  3. Factory Data reset
  4. Reset Device
  5. Erase everything.

Can gurus outline these various options, the caveat of using them, the purposes - the manual do explain enough of this. My aim is to make the least interruption to the system with minimum removal of data. I just want to stop some serious problems eg high consumption of battery. :adore:

I'm no guru but let's see here.
1: Reboots the device, Turns it off, then back on and free up ram.
2: Back's up the device with a copy, and resets it as it was before.
3: Resets the device as it was from Factory and or as it was before installing any apps.
4: I believe it is just a reset similar to a reboot?
5: Self explanatory do not do this unless you have a backup.

Like I said, I'm no guru, but I think that should cover the jist of it.

FuzMic, you are describing your devices bootloader options but those options can and will vary depending on phone make/model. Generally, one wouldn't use methods this extreme to deal with battery consumption but rather investigate options like turning off juice draining features when not in use, extended batteries, etc.

Thanks to both of you for the effort.

Iowa, you are should be right on both counts, thanks.

On battery issue, my take is to turn off all items that demand constant activity such as Wifi, sync, GPS. Then at Active Apps Widget clear all until the RAM is at the lowest. In this mode, i call it a nanny mobile similar to the good old days and check the battery level for a day or two. The other App i use to clear is KillerApp.

Any advice on this battery checking to share. My experience with my Samsung G. Advance is only 3 months ago ... so essentially a novice. Your :handkiss:much appreciated. :adore:

You have a misconception about how ram is used. Full RAM does not use anymore battery, processing power, or whatever. It is the space where apps are loaded and operate inside. Like a SD card but extremely fast.

WiFi can actually save you battery life. When you're on a cellular network the radio is always trying to hold the strongest signal it can. It takes more battery to hold on to a weak signal than a stronger one. Poor signal means poor battery life. This also applies to WiFi so you should connect to whatever is strongest.

Killing apps causes them to open slower the next time you use them. If anything, that uses more clock cycles and more battery. Services are often the main culprit of battery consumption.

17, much appreciate what you point out on ram & weak signal.

If services are the culprit, do i check them in the Active Apps. What services can i turn off? (may be a dumb question!)

All these questions started when I had the problem after 2 weeks with my new Samsung, the battery just zoom down to zero in less than 12 hours with no apparent reason; swapping another battery, problem remain. When i sent it back to the service center, they just did a factory reset with any specific determination of what's the cause; hardware inc battery remains the same. What is your prognosis of this? (again may be dumb question!)
