What am I doing wrong

Have you installed Samsung's PC software yet? Its called kies. This will Install the PC drivers necessary for your PC and gs2 to communicate with one another

They don't automatically download. What you should see once you plug it in is a prompt to connect as storage (green android robot) and once you click that it will turn orange and your phone will appear on your PC as a removable drive. Two, if you have an SD card installed.

You then can browse the files until you find the sound files you wish to copy.

Once connected this way, your SGS2 becomes like a thumbdrive which you can browse, change, rename, move etc the files and folders from the PC. You just need to know where you keep your stuff.

You don't need Kies if you do it this way, but you do need it if you want to officially upgrade and it does have some backup options. Don't recommend backing up media files though since its slow with big files. With Kies, you also get updated drivers which should help with MTP connection. It means the PC can recognize the phone and you can browse without going through the earlier USB connection. MTP seems better in 2.3.6 but I still feel the standard USB connection is the most stable.

Cheers
