Root sound good?

Hi cant get answer on DHD forum so i decided to ask were all the helpful people are my brother has just recieved his upgrade. Its tmobile branded although its unlocked. Its compatible with visionary so ill root with that question is will i need a goldcard to unbrand or will flashing a custom rom solve this problem and is there anyway he could loose unlock during process cheers in advance guys.
 
Go join XDA and read the rooting guides on there, a lot of info over there compared to here
