sound profile

what is the sound profile for. It gives you three options normal, silent and vibrate. I put it in normal and when I go back it is in silent. I did figure out how to keep it in normal. You choose vibrate and go back to normal and it then stays on. But if I forget to do this I really don't see any difference in the phone in silent mode. It still rings, I still get notifications of text etc.

Just curious.
