Sound quality of music through Car Dock - cable issue?

I have the a rapid charging navigation dock to hold my Droid Bionic in the car (Amazon.com: Motorola Vehicle Navigation Dock with Rapid Vehicle Charger for DROID BIONIC - Car Kit - Retail Packaging - Black: Cell Phones & Accessories)

It hooks to my stereo through a 3.5 mm AUX cable through my GROM. I had noticed two problems:
- didn't get into my driver's side speaker well
- poor sound quality

If I hook my Droid directly to the AUX cable to the GROM, great sound. That means the problem is somwhere in the dock, or the cable going from the dock (micro USB) to where it splits into a USB and 3.5 mm. Has anyone had such a problem before? Should I just go ahead and replace that cable? Or with prices down, just go ahead and get a new dock?

I've found cheap cables from Radioshack or elsewhere can be really flaky. I got a new one (can't recall the brand but it's pretty well established) for a few more bucks, and it's loads better. I'd try a new one if possible.
