Help Spam text messages

ajdroidx

Android Expert
Powered on my moms new note (about 10 days old) and was greeted with a bunch of spam text messages from a local area code. Not only that, I have found emails and phone calls from people we don't even know. The phone calls, well, they keep using the same numbers so its bound to happen, but the text messages?

The phone is STOCK. Not rooted. Only apps we have on it is weather bug (free), tweet caster (free) and now open signal. Tweetcaster and weather bug have adds.

Any ideas?

Thinking of going to AT&T and have a chat with them. This is annoying.

After installing certain apps i had lots of notices popping up telling me i won a free xbox and lots of other garbage. Nothing you can do about anyone sending you SMS aside from putting a block on the line. If you block it AT&T will likely credit you for any texts received in the current billing cycle. But if you refuse the block they might refuse to credit you since you aren't allowing them to prevent it from happening again. I also found out that shady app developers can somehow enroll you in things like monthly memberships which you don't have to knowingly opt-in. The only way to prevent that is to put a pin on your account. You can also set a pin on the device but that only protects you from someone buying things from the device itself.

Is this common on at&t devices? When I used the free versions on my nexus verizon I never had this issue. Wonder if its some of at&ts bloat?

My wife and i both got 4 spam sms messages last night, her on straight talk on a dell venue pro and me on my note on tmo prepaid. No new apps installed. We were both with sprint for 12 years before switching and that happened maybe a handful of times total, so it's weird in less than a couple weeks we both get spam. However, I dont think this is just an att problem, seeing as how ive had it happen with sprint and now tmobile.

Download an app called Airpush Detector from Google Playstore.
Once installed, run it. It will bring up on the screen any apps loaded onto the phone that push this garbage out, and if you click on the apps that the Airpush Detector identifies, it will show the option to uninstall.

+1 on air push, it will let you know which apps are pushing texts to you... Also when you first sign on with at&t they push some crap to you until you op out.... The only other explanation is you were sold a refurbished as a new unit - SGH rare, but happens occasionally.

I came from Sprint and my everything plan included unlimited SMS. Even so I might get/send 10 or 12 texts per month. When I switched to AT&T, unlimited texts cost $20 per month. Le'me see, figger figger two dollars - twenty dollars; $2 - $20, hmmmmm ... why I believe $2.00 is a better deal.

So now I'm paying twenty cents apiece for SPAM! Especially when SMS uses otherwise wasted bandwidth and costs T exactly nothing to send.
