Help Speaker keeps turning on

When I unplug something from the audio jack, the speaker icon appears in my Droid X's notification bar, and then when I answer a call, the speakerphone is already on and I have to rush to shut it off. How can I keep this from happening? Failing a solution, how can I turn the speakerphone off without having to be on a call to do it? This has been going on, I think, since the 2.3.3 upgrade--on my last phone, which I swapped in under warranty a couple of weeks ago because the audio jack was broken, and the problem continues on this phone.
