That's like saying I don't understand why people go swimming when there are boats. The point is, these multimedia devices are a convenient and portable replacement for when you don't have access to a stereo/TV. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather be at home listening to my expensive hi-fi but that's not always possible. How people can expect a phone to replace a stereo/tv is strange to me. Why listen to weedy weak bodied sound when you can simply plug in earphones or external speakers and hear a rich well rounded sound? The amount of kids I see walking round with tinny high pitched rap music piping out of the phone they are carrying thinking they look cool is unbelivable, or is that last bit just me getting old
For the record I had a Nokia 95 8gb. Yes the speakers where better but how you could claim it provided surround sound from a pair of tiny speakers about 4cm apart at a party with all the noise that would be going on is hard to believe.
The speaker on the Desire is just about acceptable for what I expect it to be used for eg text alerts, ringtones, sat nav and the odd handfree call.
Earphones are only really viable if you have one listener. I think you'll agree for the example I used earlier it wouldn't really work.
Of course it is better if someone takes along some speakers but that doesn't happen every time which is why for spontaneous occasions the N95's speakers are ok. Oh and I was talking about quiet get-togethers in hotel rooms where other paying guests have to be taken into account, not full on raves.
The N95 8gb comes with a pre-installed Dolby Surround Sound application. Admittedly it isn't true surround sound (but it would be foolish and pedantic to believe that it is achievable given the physical limitations of the device) but it does an excellent job of "widening" the stereo effect and is extremely convincing when placed in a corner so the sound is projected forwards.
As for chav kids walking about listening to Lady Gaga or Poof Diddy Doggy Dog on theirs? Yes very annoying. I believe it is some sort of noisy, disrespectful expression of self-identity. We were the same as kids (only without the disrespectfulness).
Maybe HTC should develop the Desire's speakers further so that they are only capable of producing the very highest frequencies (much worse than at the moment) so that only teenagers and dogs can hear it.
