Help speech to text requires "server connection"?

I'm using an LG Optimus with Android 2.2.

Getting frustrated with the touchpad I'm using the speech to text feature more and more.

sometimes I get a "server connection error" when I use this feature.

I assumed the voice recognition software is installed locally on the device and doesn't need a server to operate???

does anyone know what this "server" is? Is it just calling something on the device a server, or is it actually sending my voice to an external server to be converted to text?

I'm guessing it's not doing sending my voice out to a server, but curious why it's calling it a server, and what can cause this error. It happens fairly frequently.

thanks

Google's servers process the voice data and convert it to text.

When I started using the voice to text feature my phone would do the same thing and then I realized that you need an internet connection to use it. I don't understand why, it seems kinda dumb to me.
