Root Speech - to - text ???

But when I wish to draft a text message, I type in each and every character, every word. Sometimes at 80mph that's a bit iffy, and always it's a pain.

Today a friend said there should be a speech-to-text application that accurately does that job. If so, I'll be both happy and embarrassed.

What have I been missing?

Vlingo is an amazing app. I tried ShoutOUt first and it didn't get the speech exactly right and I was fixing all my texts. This one is pretty dead on.

Unless I'm just misunderstanding something, there's also the Voice Search. I use it all the time for texts.

long press the Search key and say

"Send text to That Person: Hey comma what are you doing question mark"

It asks for confirmation to send: "Hey, what are you doing?" to That Person. The trickiest thing is to not pause until you're done rolling out the text.

I've tried this but with no result with Nonsensikal 16.1. What have I missed? is there another app to be installed?

As far as I know, you only need to have "Voice Search", Google Inc. installed from the market. (Note that this has nothing to do with "Google Voice").

You've seen this Google vid ..., right?

I like the promise of Vlingo - it is much, much more hands free than Google "Voice Search", but when it mis-translates something, you don't have an option to manually edit the result as you do with with Google Voice Search. In my vehicle I seem to get plenty of garbled speech captures (with both of them), even when I attempt to speak slowly and clearly - probably an ambient noise issue.

Perhaps that is intentional feature of Vlingo - staring at a 3-inch screen while hurtling down the road at 80 mph is not a wise thing to be doing in the first place, and it's whole point is to do things hands-free. (Plus, Vlingo can read texts to you automatically as they come in with the "safe reader" feature.)
