[Sprint] 4.2 ROM Experiences

Android Expert
I decided to start this thread to discuss our experiences (good, bad, and the ugly) about the 4.2 ROM's that we've tried so far. So please share your 4.2 experiences here, so others who are curious or "on the fence", may know what to expect.

The first and only 4.2 ROM I've flashed so far (and am currently still running) is Hoang's Unofficial AOKP. My experience has been perfect thus far and I haven't run into any issues whatsoever. I used BRD's 4.2 gapps (which I highly recommend) and am running this in conjunction with Trinity's latest 4.2 alpha. I haven't run into any issues with the contents of my sd card being moved around, nor deep sleep issues, or FC's either. My experience with 4.2 and this ROM have been nothing less than stellar. Anyone wanting to give 4.2 a try, but don't know which ROM to flash, MUST give this a go!

Im scared, well timid anyway, with the sd card stuff. Guess im concerned about going back to another 4.1.2 nandroid. I'm beginning to think I just need to move forward and just commit to 4.2.
But I'm this close to trying mmuzys.

Just make sure you're running the latest TWRP version and give it a go!

hi no big deal..it just doubles ur sd card ..just flash to 4.2 then nan .then flash a 4.12 and nan....then use a 4.12 nan back move ur good stuff from sd /0 to root sd/ then delete sd/0....not all nans on clockwork sd/0 will work doing move or copy /paste ..for me only original ics does..u can tell by time it takes to flash...not long ..no good..hope it helps with ur decision..ps if it wasnt a challange it wouldnt b fun...:)

Alright so I made the jump to 4.2 (hoang's AOKP) since I finally got a fully working phone again. So far I am liking it but there are a couple of things I am having to get use to. I'll post back when I have more of an opinion.

How do I update to the latest TWRP? THANKS I am definitely having problems with SD card since I flashed to 4.2.1. Actually when I do a back up. If I try to restore after flashing another rim its gone. If I'm not mistaken. It didn't do that before.

I'm getting closer to flashing a 4.2 rom ... Yeah I know, it's about time. I'm just happy with 4.1.2 but bored. So here's my plan.
Flash the new twrp
nandroid backup my current 4.1.2 rom
backup using TB
flash a 4.2.1 rom

Two questions:
1. with the new twrp, can I easily go back and forth between 4.2.1 and 4.1.2 nandroids as well as new roms. In other words, once I go to a 4.2.1 rom can i go back to 4.1.2 roms or will this create sd/0 issues?
2. Will TB still be able to find my TB backups going back and forth between 4.1.2 and 4.2.1 roms?

and Merry Christmas!

I'm glad you're taking the leap! Since going to 4.2, I've never restored a 4.1.2 backup, so I can't answer those questions with 100% confidence. I'm assuming that ever since the latest TWRP, those issues have been resolved. I think Mizzou has flashed back and forth, and would be a better person to answer.

There is one tricky issue with going back and forth. On 4.1.2, you can view the true /sdcard directory. On 4.2.1, your SD card stuff should get moved to the /sdcard/0 directory. Here's where it gets confusing. On 4.2.1, the /sdcard/0 directory is displayed through root explorer (or any other file explorer) as /sdcard. So, if you still have any files remaining in /sdcard, you will not be able to view them on 4.2. On first flash on a 4.2 rom, this directory will be created and I think everything will get moved to /sdcard/0 automatically, so you won't have a problem initially, but going back and forth can be kind of a pain in the butt.

Sorry for beating a dead horse, but if I abandon what I have now (wiped my phone clean), then flash a 4.2 rom, make a nandroid of the 4.2 rom, then flash a 4.1.2 rom and nandroid it, the backups will get stored in two different locations, even if i am using the new twrp?

Nope, TWRP will store them in /sdcard/0 as the way 4.1.2 sees it. It's /sdcard as the way 4.2.1 sees it.

after playing around, if you go to /data/media, you can access all the stuff in the /sdcard directory on 4.2.1. I just now realized this. Thank goodness.

Flashing the new Sourcery RLS right now.

Uhhhm. I'm still confused.
If I start out with a completely clean slate and the new twrp, 4.2.1 and 4.1.2 nandroids will get stored in the same place, /sdcard/0 AND new titanium backups would be here too?

but if i DID NOT start out with a clean slate and still had stuff left over from previous flashed 4.1.2 roms, old Titanium backups and nandroids made with the old twrp i could find that stuff in /sdcard AND in /data/media but anything new flashed or backed up would be in /sdcard/o.

EDIT -
well I finally just did it, downloaded the new twrp, backed everything up and flashed a 4.2.1 rom. I felt like I was stuck in time. No problems, old backups are there and pix are all there and everything seems to work. I don't think 4.2.1 is that great, but at least I am moving forward.

BTW does the bootloader need to be updated?
