Sprint Activation

I am not a sprint customer I am on verizon. After I flash custom rom on verizon I generally have to reactivate my phone. How do I do this on sprint or do you not need to?

I am going to be rooting my sisters Hero, it is being used on sprint network now. Will I loose activation after I root and flash a rom?
