Root [Sprint/Cricket] Just rooted. Suggestions?

Okay so I've been trying to download ROMs via the galaxy s3 root site and it keeps saying download unsuccessful. It won't show in my download folder. I've tried different ROMs and I'm on wifi
 
Are you downloading from xda?

If not, you should be.

Do you have a computer you can download them from? It sounds like you're still having issues downloading on the phone
 
Also, when you go to Settings -> Storage, what is your available space? If you have an external SD card, what is the available space for that? You may have a lot of incomplete downloads taking up temp space.

11.95gb plenty of room, no?

I downloaded from the galaxy s3 root site. Now that you suggested xda I'll head over there. Also, I don't have a working computer to download ROMs right now. I could use a work computer if needed. I assumed I could do this straight from my phone, though.
 
I'm not familiar with the s3 root site.The stuff on xda is going to be directly from the developers, and will be the most up to date available.

No problem. You can do it straight from the phone, but computers tend to be a little more reliable when we're downloading 850mb files.

Also, AOSP ROMs are nearly 8x smaller than Touchwiz ones. Something to keep in mind if you've got really long download times.;)
 
Thank you for the tips :) I just moved to a new place and am not fully set up yet so I rely heavily on my phone for pretty much everything. Yeah lol I noticed the ROMs are 850mb+ so I took advantage of fast wifi at my job to download (even without wifi I am on LTE in my area so downloads aren't horrible and it doesn't hurt to have that unlimited data).

The last one and only one I downloaded successfully today from that site was the Synergy ROM and it had a date from April 19th I believe. Is that reliable to go ahead with or should I delete it and just rely on the XDA stuff? Thanks again. Really appreciate it. I try to check on here when I am off work and stuff

You can give it a flash and see if it downloaded correctly. :thumbup: just keep that nandroid handy in case you need to revert.

Ha, I figured I'd ask BEFORE I tried it. Is there a link to where I can download ROMs specifically for Sprint from xda? I tried fishing around for them and didn't see any.

Also, I noticed there is a mobile version of ODIN for $4.99 on Play. Is that app any good? Would it help me at all in my position where I don't have a pc?

You'll pretty much only use Odin to root or unroot (there are files you can flash from recovery to unroot as well... So now that youre rooted, you dont use Odin at all)

I wouldn't bother with it ;)

Touchwiz ROMS are usually in the android development section, while AOSP ROMS are typically in the original android development section.

I'm back here after a busy weekend. I successfully downloaded Chemistry ROM but haven't flashed it yet. I did a Nandroid backup. I also searched around in the recovery while I was there and saw settings like advanced, wipe dalvik cache, etc. Before I flash do I need to run through those?

Right now to me it seems like the order is

1. Download rom (did that)

2. Go into recovery and do a factory reset wipe, and then go into install and flash that chemistry rom?

I want to be 100% sure I take the right steps so I don't brick my phone. I did remember you emphasized the nandroid backup so I went ahead and did that as of right now.

I would create a nandroid, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe data, and factory reset. Then flash the rom and kernel (if desired). Fix permissions. Reboot.

When in doubt, read the rom op and it usually will provide instructions for flashing. This is important for some roms that recommend specific wiping or additional re boots.

Thanks so much for that. You wouldn't happen to know off the top of your head if there are any specific instructions for the chemistry rom? I'll probably end up trying this all out tomorrow. Thank you again for the step-by-step instructions :)

I didn't see anything in the xda thread. They is an older rom though. You might want to consider something a little more current. Unless it's been updated.

I didn't even realize it was outdated :( I'd like to stay current so I will consider a different one :)

Doing the factory reset will wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache.

To keep it simple, factory reset it really all you need when doing a "full" wipe.
 
I always wipe each individually then factory reset. This is an improvement from my wiping everything 3x and running a super wipe script. I know, i have wipe ocd.

Gapps are google apps. Developers arent allowed to distribute them with an AOSP ROM, so you have to download those seperately and flash them after your ROM flash.

If you're going to try AOSP, I'd go with either CM10.1 or liquidsmooth

I'd also suggest the dkp kernel :) (Also flashed AFTER the ROM. Doesnt matter if its before or after gapps)

Hey! I am back from successfully flashing the Chemistry rom! No problems, no issues etc!! Rxpert83, thank you VERY MUCH for your guidance, patience and support! :D
It's a starter rom for me but it's also a big deal for me since I messed up my old S3. I'm going to explore this rom for now and then try some more later on! Thanks again! :smokingsomb:
