Root [Sprint/Cricket] New to root

I'm fairly certain I'm putting this in the wrong place, but I wasn't sure where else it should go... so here I am. I'm new to rooting, I've had a few and this would be my first venture into such a thing. I've pulled up a few roots for CWM the "XDA-Developer" are the instructions I've been leaning towards for root. However a few issues arise, first... Some of the instructions say "Auto-Reboot" should be clicked off, and some say it should be on. So I'm not sure which it should be, as the all the files I'm told to DL are roughly the same. Second... Every time I try to DL "clockworkmod.tar" it DL's but when I try to open it under the PDA button on Odin, it doesn't show. I've tried unpacking it from the zip but no dice. Do I need a special program to view .TAR files? I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING

You did post this in the wrong section, I'm sure a mod will move it when they notice it. Based on your last sentence, you definitely want to read this thread and then read it again. You MUST know what you're doing if you're going to root. Make sure you are following the instructions to the letter and make sure you are reading the correct instructions for your device. Is there a specific reason you want to gain by rooting?
 
Im terrible with computers lol, i only use them to root and unbrick phones.
What guide are you using? What you want is cf-auto root which roots and flashes CWM.
It will be a zip file and you right click and unzip it once so youre left with a tar file.
Can you post a link to the guide youre using and tell us what carrier/model number your s3 is :thumbup:

Oh yeah i dont think the auto reboot thing matters but keep it off just incase unless someone knows better
 
Read, read, read before rooting is my advice. I read a ton of stuff before doing it, I also used an older version of Odin as the latest version was being a bit iffy with me too.

That's all that advice I can give at the moment but it hopefully helps.
