Root [Sprint/Cricket] Question about Kernals

Kongoll

Newbie
So I have tried reading up on kernals but I'm still not sure as to waht exactly they do and or what one I should get. I am running Jelly Bomb Domination rom on my rooted S3, what kernal would go best with that setup ?

Kernels pretty much (very loosely interpreted, lol) communicates between your phone (hardware) and your ROM (software). If you don't have a kernel installed in the ROM, the phone won't boot up.

You can under clock or overclock them (change how fast they tell your CPU it can run) which can save battery life at the risk of performance (depends on what type of apps you're running. Some don't like underclocking) or degrade battery life but increase your performance.

Here is a link from the HTC EVO 4G that a GREAT guide here at Android Forums, Ocnbrze, put together about kernels: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/389360-kernels-dummies.html

The info is good but if there are any kernels in that thread DO NOT flash any of those of kernels because you will brick your phone! Those were designed specifically for the Evo 4G.

I was heavy into kernels on the OG Evo 4G but on the S3 I have chosen to stay away from flashing any other kernel(s) aside from stock. I haven't seen any reports of people getting greater battery life because of them in my opinion. The reports look the same as me when I'm running a stock kernel.

Check the sticky in our forum under 'all things root' subheading kernels and check out the kernels listed there. Flash a kernel that goes with your rom. TW rom - TW kernel, CM/AOSP rom - CM/AOSP kernel.

I hope that helped.

Am I able to overclock or undervolt without flashing a kernal?

No. If the kernel doesn't support oc or uc then it wouldn't matter if you changed anything. The kernel has to support that ability

Ok thank you for all your help btw I really do appreciate it.

Do you know of a good kernel to use with Blazer? I switched from jelly Bomb to blazer today.

Specifically naw, check out the TW kernels in the all things root sticky and read the developer post on them and probably a few of the last pages of the thread to see what ppl are saying about it
