Also what version of cwm did you make the backup in? Try flashing another recovery. Twrp is awesome. I'd do everything from scratch. Odin than a new recovery ice.Twrp. than a full backup than the rom of your choose. Ya know there's a zip you can flash in recovery and it'll do everything Odin does plus it resets the flash count too. And you can keep root too. Hang on .... Than download ROM installer from market and open swipe left and choose "flash recovery" choose cwm-cwm touch-or Twrp. And flash. Good to go with a brand new recovery.
 
Hallelujah it worked! I tried clearing out the nandroid.md5 file before, using a regular text editor. This time I used Notepad++ and I removed all of the spaces in the backup name. Do you think it was the spaces that did it? That seems silly. But is Notepad++ really different from editing it with normal notepad?

EDIT: Also, I have some questions about the backups. Does it save everything, so even if I deleted everything on both my internal sd card and my external sd card it would restore it, or no? Also why does the wipe/factory reset option in CWM Recovery not delete certain things? Like I still had a bunch of files on my sd card even after the wipe. Should I bother flashing a superwipe zip? That's what I used to do for my evo.

EDIT2: Also, how do i find gapps for my phone? I'm about to flash a stable rom and I'm pretty sure I need gapps, right?
 
Okay question 1. Spaces take up space like a letter.. so it's considered a character.

No. 2. Yes I believe NP++ is made for development whereas the other is for text alone.

No. 3. No recovery only saves the phones operating system, data, and I think a folder on the internal storage called Android. Nothing on the external.

No. 4. No it wont. Because it doesn't effect your storage. Just the phones internal storage for operating systems.

No. 5. I don't know what a superwipe zip is soooo. Idk..

No. 6. Finally what Rom are you flashing and I'll post a link.

Just got a galaxy s3 with sprint and having a lot of trouble flashing, I get through odin with a pass and can boot into cwm but when I go to install from sd card or even install from internal memory it won't even let me select anything, I've tried with the touch version and the volume rockers and it wasn't let me progress past it! I click it and nothing happens, please help :)

They added an extra kernel flag. The problem is they still show as rev 4 hardware and MD4 so they made a change without marking it in anyway we can determine other than the old recoveries don't mount any storage.
Again a big thanks to @ktoonsez for recognizing exactly what the problem was when I described it to him as similar to the S4
 
So do I just do the whole odin deal again and after it boots up flash the mod recoveries and then go I'm to recovery and try to choose a zip? Sorry I'm new to this device, droid x was a lil easier for me
 
I had a problem mounting my external SD card. I also had a problem saving my backup to the internal as there was insufficient space. this all caused a lot of frustration and extra work.

Anyway, the reason I couldn't mount my SD card was that it's a64GB card formatted with exFAT which does not work except with stock kernels.

I solved my problem by temporarily switching back to a 32Gb card formatted with FAT32.

I wish this problem had been better publicized
