Root [Sprint/Cricket] Snag with Odin (beginning root)

DragonSlayer95

Hey guys

So last night, I went to try to root my new s3, but I keep running into the problem where Odin displays (getting pit mapping) or something to that effect while trying to load on cwm via Odin.

http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...e-updated-how-root-your-sprint-galaxy-s3.html

That's the root guide (similar to others) that I'm going by for now.

I've done most trouble shooting, switching cables, ports, reboot of pc and device etc.

Any ideas?

Do you have usb debugging turned on? It doesn't seem to mention that in the guide but it's best to have it turned on when flashing. Also do you have kies installed. If you do make sure it isn't running in the background.

Haven't had a chance to try but last night I definitely did have usb debugging turned on.

Is running as administrator required for Odin?

Windows xp so gotta have administration password which I obviously don't :/

Update

Still a no go, yet again getting stuck on "Getting PIT mapping"

If I can get a hold of another pc, I'll keep trying.

Running as administrator is recommended but not necessary. I've never bothered to and haven't had any problems. Re-partition wasn't ticked when you first tried was it? Getting stuck at pit for mapping seems to occur most when it ess accidentally ticked.

What state is your phone in, does it boot? If not it might be worth reflashing your stock firmware and then trying the cf auto root.

Honestly I'm not too sure. I don't really want to suggest too much as not familiar with the US models. I only really felt comfortable suggesting the auto root as there's a version for various devices including my international which are the exact same procedure. I have heard of a root method for the Sprint which doesn't use Odin so it might be worth looking into that. I have no idea where I read about it though.

Alls good, could just be my pc after all, super old 98 upgraded to xp.

I'll try to grab my buddies that's a 7 and see if anything different happens.

I have noticed those 2 differences and I've went by both along with a fresh install of files/drivers. No dice yet.

I'll try another pc hopefully tomorrow

Well, I did some more searching and if its any consolation, this member here (Rooted_s3) went thru H trying to root his device and also got stock on the PIT Mapping error.
In the end, he tried on a newer computer with no issues and it worked flawlessly:

Thanks sir, I started gathering after going through all the trouble shooting and several different versions of Odin including su only without recovery that shotgun suggested above and gs3 root kit that I found as well.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get to another pc to give it a go.

Thanks guys!

Old PC means you probably were using a sub-USB 2.0. (original USB 1.0 or something to that affect)

Add that to the possibility that there was something funky going on with the drivers you had installed.

I never tried flashing a phone on a older computer, but I bet USB 2.0+ might be a requirement? (most android phones have been born in the post USB 2.0 era from what I can recall. Newer phones might not like being flashed on old slow USB ports.)

Some cheaper USB hubs aren't USB 2.0 and could cause problems even if the hub is connected to a USB 2.0/3.0 port.

USB ports have a small current limit. (usually around 500mw) A hub takes up some of that power and then piling on a phone that by default would attempt to charge off that connection as well, then you will run into problems.

Only hubs exempt from this is ones that have a secondary power source like an AC adapter or special Y connector for using power from two or more USB ports.

I wouldn't recommend using a hub powered or otherwise. It adds one more thing in the mix that could fail midway in a flash and cause all sorts of mayhem.

Actually unless the requirements are different from my old s2 and my current s3, I'm still stumped as to why I ran into problems.

Why? Back on my s2, using the same computer by the way. I had zero problems flashing recovery from within odin to obtain root.
