Root [Sprint/Cricket] Sprint System Update Today

welcome to the fold my friend!!!

With the OG EVO it took me almost the first semester of my last year in college to decide to root, since then I flashed so many different ROMs during the winter break and this past summer (until July 13th when I purchased this amazing phone).

so, i updated the rom and modem, but now i cant restore to my nand after a factory reset and wipes of the cache and dalvik. I even reinstalled the LG8 modem after the restore... and ideas?

Did you accept the OTA? Or did you flash an updated OTA ROM and which modem did you flash? Try reinstalling the recovery.

Okay since you're running LG8 then it's probably the LI3 update. If you accept and have a custom recovery it will try to install and fail and won't ask you again. If you don't have a custom recovery it will succeed and you will be unrooted.

If you want the latest rooted OTA from Sprint you can just flash the rooted OTA.

Click the link 'Rom List' in my signature, click 'Official Rooted OTA', download that file to your computer, transfer to your phone, boot into recovery (TWRP or CWM), wipe ONLY cache and dalvik cache, flash the ROM, reboot and you're updated to the latest firmware without losing data.

which file?
odex
deodex
or
full firmware - all in one

they go in differnt parts of the device and really dont have anything to do with eachothers operation other thatn the incompatibility of the new modems with the old roms. So the order doesnt matter at all

i just downloaded the odexed full firmware and the new LI3 modem and my phone is still saying that there is a system update. wth??!?!?!?

model # SPH-L710
version 4.0.4
baseband version L710VPLI3
kernel version 3.0.8-618049
build # highonandroid v. 03

That looks like a custom ROM. The build number says high on android so it might be based on LG8 and not LI3.

so looks like changing roms? i want to do the jb rom but does anyone know if the wifi tether issue has been fixed yet? 90% of my phone use is tethering. That is why im hesitating to try it.

woat case scenario... you go into recovery, make a nand, wipe all, flash the rom and it doesnt work... you then go back into recovery, re-wipe, restore and viola!! youre as good as new (or old... or whatever)

thats what i was afraid of. whats the best one right now? freegs3? miui? anakonda? im not looking for anything crazy. just boost some speed on things

i have a stock nand. u talking bout factory reset? or just wipe data? sounds like alot of steps to keep an old rom. I only like this rom cuz it swaps internal/sd card storage. he did make a hack to just swap memories. i might just try a new rom and the app2sd hack.

i was looking at the rom list and all of them are based off LG8. So if i flash any of these roms am i going to get the system update request still? kinda confused here.

Yes. But of you have a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP, preferably TWRP :p ) then you can accept the update, it will try to install and fail and you won't get the notification anymore.

There is a stock rooted LI3 odex that you can flash over a stock setup. Also, FreeGS3 is updated to LI3. It's linked directly in my signature if you want to try that rom. It's fast and has some features.

I have CWM right now. im looking into twrp. imma try the freegs3. thanks

No problem. Just remember TWRP and CWM nandroid backups are not interchangeable. If you flash TWRP you'll have to make a nandroid with that if you want a backup.

eeessh that kinda sux. that means i'll have to basically revert back to stock, download goomanager, do a nand, and then customize. i've been reading CWM and TWRP don't get along besides nands. what will i be getting myself into?

History (from the OG evo in my case) with CWM hasn't been good. Not wiping correctly or messing up people's phone but I never had a problem with any recovery. They both did well on my phone. You can keep CWM if you want.
