Sprint epic 4g turning connecting to wifi by itself

My sprint epic 4g is connecting by itself to wifi while in airplane mode with wifi turned off. This phone is inactive as my. Sprint GNote2 is now my phone. Am I hacked or is this the sneaky sprint optimizer at work? I am running stock gingerbread fc09. I also use norton and avg antivrus on the old epic4g since I use this for email and web surfing a lot as I. Love the slider keyboard. I still fatfinger type on the gsnote2. I really miss not having a slider as my primary phone : (

From the only thing I can gather is the sprint optimizer kicking in since even if wifi is turned off even in airplane mode, if optimizer is enabled the wifi will turn on and connect automatically without notice.

The note 2 (at least my one - maybe its a Sprint improvement) has slider input as a standard option on the stock samsung keyboard

menu
settings
language and input
press the cog next to samsung keyboard
tick the continuous input box
